Well, if you mean in game, you appear as your ship, in 3d. However, in the character information, you create a portrait when you create your character. The portrait is visible when your information is looked up. You can also write a short blurb about your character, guild, or whatever. Color editing is possible, but there's an ever decreasing character limit...

So you don't see other players walking around like in cities etc?

Nope. It's a game set almost completely in space. Most of the time you're flying around from space station to space station, out to an asteroid belt or jumping across systems through stargates (basically). When in a space station, you can see other people, but it's purely by portrait, no moving avatars. It's fairly well done imo, but that does make it fairly different than any other MMORPG. If you haven't at least give the trial a shot.

I would say go for the 3 month package. It's less than buying a typical PC game, and you don't feel nearly as rushed in making a decision to continue the subscription. If you liked the trial, chances are you'll continue to like the game. Don't spring too far though, 6-12 months, because the game can drag a bit depending on how into the game you get.
Just the advice of someone who did it and didn't regret it

Oh wow, I just found out that there WILL be avatars implemented! The new system is called Abulation. Apparently it's going to give the player an avatar to walk around stations with. They're looking at allowing custom makeup, scars, clothing texture, making a player's size affect their movement and many other interesting things. No word on release date that I've seen though.
There's a low quality game vid HERE.
