Using Bitdefender these days, it's quiet and stays out of the way. It's so quiet in fact that when I had to reinstall my OS I completely forgot to reinstall Bitdefender until a couple days later lol, just does it's thing in the background... love it. Ranks really high in tests, thus far haven't had any issues. Bitdefender could use some work in their overall package though, they don't quite offer all the same features as some of the other big players.

As has been said a fair few times in this thread, that's some real bad misinformation. No one can force you to use one, but you're definitely better off with a good one.
I've taken to using Kaspersky, it's provided free as part of my assistantship and has provided the best experience I've had so far. We keep the planetarium computers isolated with an air gap so I have it auto-scan my removable drives, otherwise I pretty much never see it unless there's an issue.

I really liked Kaspersky but for whatever reason it kept slowing down my PC. It's a really good package though, them and Bitdefender always seem to be right at the top of the charts for protection. Can't go wrong with them.

Yup. Lucky as in lucky you haven't got a virus. Sorry man, I'm a big believer in safe practices can go a long way but as these things get more and more complex, as the "hackers" get more savy... it's just not a good idea anymore to be unprotected. Be safe, hope it doesn't happen to you.

In recent tests among other free anti-viruses Avast ranks high. It competes well against paid software too in detection. The main problem with free is usually they hold back stuff to sell you something better, so you don't get a full suite. Or you are the product which could mean collecting information for advertisers and what not. Avast does collect data, you can read about what they can do with it here:

    Avast Privacy Policy

From a quick glance over don't log in with facebook for them, they'll try to get permission to post as you which amounts to free advertising for them. If stuff like this that is problematic with free stuff but yea, in terms of pure detection is does really well for a free one.
