i don't watch a lot tv these days, usually because there isn't anything good on, or it's a re-run

I don't think i've remembered them all, i forgot to mention I also used to watch Oppassen and The Flying Doctors and I used to watch a canadian youth series about a boy in a coma, but I can't remember the name of that series anymore.

Actually a lot of the shows aren't in dutch, and i tend to watch more foreign shows than dutch shows.

Dutch cable tv kinda works in a weird way.

We have about a dozen or so dutch networks on cable, a few regional channels and a lot of foreign channels. We have 3 public channels (NL 1, 2 and 3), usually operated by membership driven unions or foundations (like KRO = catholic, RKK = catholic church, IKON = eucomenical, HUMAN = humanist, VARA = socialist, NCRV = orthodox calvinist, VPRO liberal protestant, AVRO = liberal, TROS = liberal, BNN = youth channel founded by Bart de Graaf, NOS and NPS = state operated, EO = evangelical, OHM = hindu, NMO = muslim, BOS = buddhist, JS = jewish, MAX = elderly, Omrop Fryslan = frisian), a dozen or so regional channels (like Omrop Fryslan, OOG) and some commercial channels, most of which are operated from Luxembourg (like rtl 4, 5 and 7), then there are SBS6, NET5, Veronica, HG, TMF (a dutch music channel bought by MTV). Besides Dutch cable networks we also get a lot of foreign channels, like CNN (american), Comedy Central (american), BBC1 (british), BBC2 (british), ARD (german), ZDF (german), NDR (german), the discovery channel (british), national geographic (american), VRT (belgian), CANVAS (belgian), eurosport and MTV. We also used to get RTL+ (operating from luxembourg, but german language) and TV5 (french).

on the dutch channels, about 50% of all the programming is in dutch, another 40% is english (mostly american, but also british, canadian and australian) and the other 10% are minority languages like frisian, or any other foreign language in the world, but mostly german or french.

Dutch networks or channels when dealing with foreign language programming usually subtitle the programs, only programs for really young children are synchronised.

To point out how weird dutch cable works, in the eighties i could watch star trek the next generation on two different channels. I could watch it on NL1, where it was broadcasted by KRO with dutch subtitling, or I could watch it on the BBC where it wasn't subtitled. Only in the late nineties did the BBC start to subtitle their programs in english for their deaf. The re-runs in the late nineties i could get star tek next gen subtitled in dutch on NL2 when it was broadcasted by veronica (then still a public channel) or subtitled in english with teletext by the BBC.

for instance the programs i watch during the week are:

-comedy central roasts, comedy central standup comedians, I watch on comedy central (an american commercial channel), but it subtitles it programs in dutch.
-burn notice, i watch on rtl 5 (a luxembourg commercial channel only operating in the netherlands) where it is subtitled in dutch
-the pacific and two and a half men, i watch on veronica (a commercial channel) where it is subtitled in dutch
-the late show with david letterman i watch on HG (a dutch commercial channel) with dutch subtitles
-the 8 o'clock nos journal i watch on NL1 where it is broadcasted by the NOS
-buitenhof and avro klassiek i watch on NL2, where it is respectively broadcasted by VARA and AVRO
-de westrijden (football matches) i watch on SBS6 (a dutch commercial channel), which is naturally without subtitles

Whenever there is a new program on television that i want to watch, i watch it on whatever channel gets it first on a convenient timeslot. For instance when star trek the next generation first came on television it was on the bbc. So I watched it on the bbc without subtitles first. This delay is caused by the fact that subtitling takes time. In the eighties this subtitling took a lot of time. We used to get the christmas episodes of american series on the 4th of july and the 4th of july episodes on christmas. It has improved somewhat today, but it's still slow compared to no subtitles. For example I watch David Letterman on HG, but we are about a week behind in the programming. We get the monday show on friday.

You get a lot more than we get. I have about 28 channels, it used to be 30, but the cable provider cancelled 2 of them (TV cinq and RTL+).
