RPG will never die they have been around way before video games... I think your right until companies learn that they need to come up with something new for RPG's, FPS will catch up and possibly even pass RPG for a while which might be a good think because it will force the RPG companies to get creative.
Honestly the future might be a combination of FPS and RPG.

Haha, that would be funny, but I don't think it would be very good.
The MMOFPS style they have right now is pretty good. Some games make you play to get cash and exp to level up and buy guns. The guns sometimes can only be rented, or in some games they can be bought for your whole career in the game. Some games, like BF2142, BF2 and CoD4, require you to gain exp by playing and you either unlock items at a set level, or you get to unlock something every time you rank up. In 2142, there are 40 ranks, which keeps you busy. In BF2, there are tons of insanely hard to get ranks in which you need tons of certain awards and such. In CoD4, you can just play and level up in different game modes and they give you weapons along the way. If you play on the Xbox 360 or PS3, you get a chance to prestige, where you gain a cool looking rank, but losing all your levels and weapons. There is no prestige, you just play at rank 55 for life. :P
