Starcraft and Warcraft III are both fantastic online strategy games that are free to play forever after you buy them ($10-20). Neither are browser-based, however.

Dark Orbit is pretty cool. This is coming from someone who is not that much of a fan of Sci Fi games. Dark Orbit kept me busy for a little while.

Evony is ok, but building takes forever. Sometimes to long, which leaves you grounded until your buildings are built cause it is based on real time, meaning, if you try to build, say, three buildings at the same time and it takes 8 hours to complete them, that means in real life 8 hours.

Also you are always connected regardless of you computer being on or off, so someone can seige your town while you are asleep. To avoid this if you have a internet modem, and you shut it off, you might be safe from a seige, although I never tested it.
