Anarchy Online did do it, so does Entropia Universe. I'm pretty sure in both cases you could turn them off with some effect on loot or something. I say if it helps keep free accounts going do it, but for the paying accounts, they should be able to turn em off without penalty...

pay to play sucks, you can't hooked up your characters online, if you don't have that account load... i just hope free to plays offer rare items.. ^__^
