Default what does a game developing team consist of?

(sorry mods, this is in the wrong forum. Please move it appropriately)

Just like the title says. Say I want to put together a team to make a 3d game. This is what I'm thinking I need (for a basic - required - team to get the game running):
  1. programmer
  2. 3d modeler
  3. 3d animator
  4. level designer

Now, say I want to make a 2D game. I guess the team would comprise of a smaller group right? since we aren't using 3d graphics. so the team would be:
  1. programmer
  2. sprite artist

I know there are much more to this, such as you would need a producer, a marketing director, testers, etc.

But I'm trying to understand what the BASIC requirement is for a team to create a 2D game vs a 3D game.

Anyone care to clarify my list and point me in the right direction?

You are right. 2D graphics wouldn't need as a big as a team. Look at World of Goo. I think just two people made it!

Hm, I've never really known how things like that work, but the mechanics to all of them fascinate me. Like buzzsaw said, i think that 2d games need much less work than 3d games. Although 2 people could be sufficient, if you're thinking of making a 2d game, I would suggest more than that, unless both people are extremely competent XD

Well it depends what your individual skillsets are. There's nothing saying a 3d modeller can't also be an animator... likewise a programmer could still do level design.

You'd need a programmer, animator, and artist on both teams, and why not a level designer on the 2d team as well? However, 3D games require much more effort, so giving everyone a single job would be more efficient, while 2D games require less effort, so people could do several jobs, like you could have an animator who is also an artist.
