Review
Perfect
World, as told by one of my friends, was the
"World of Warcraft" of Asia/China. Myself being
Chinese, I had to go check it out. It turns out
that this game is actually one of the best, if
not the best, that I have ever played. Take note
that although I'm
Chinese, I was born in Virginia and have been
living in Massachusetts for 11 years of my life.
Thus, the game that I play is an English
Version. That being
said, let's start the review!
This review is going to be a little bit
different because I'm going to be reviewing
every little aspect about the game. That's how I
like my reviews, so that the reader understands
my decisions. Each section
will be rated on a 10 point scale.
1. Website Design/Infrastructure
The website for the version of Perfect World
that I play is
http://www.perfectworld.com.my/ The site was
very slow to load, possibly because the website
servers are located in China. The design looks
very different than your traditional MMORPG
site, like Maplestory, Shaiya, and many others. I like this website design a lot more,
it looks much crisp and cleaner and the use of
Flash animations is very clean. The navigation
bar is easy to use, and provides a great place
for every bit of information you would ever want
to ask. The forums are also nicely implemented in the
"Community" tab, so that part was very easy and
nice to use.
However, the site itself, again, was slow to
load. I even tried to access it on 4
different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox,
Opera, and Safari). The overall score is an 8/10
2. Game Launcher Graphics
This is just another average game launcher,
nothing revolutionary here. The only problem
that a whole lot of other users were
experiencing was that the auto-patcher didn't
work, forcing us to manually patch. This was
quite annoying. However, the company says that
they're working on it and this problem is very
recent.
Manually patching took a while, but I was
finally ready to play the game. The overall
score is a 7/10
3. Game Start-up/Login Screen
This can say a lot about a game. If a login
screen is plain
and bland, many users get immediately turned off
and uninstall it.
The Perfect World login screen was very nice and very beautiful
without being cluttered. However, the
Message of the Day window that opened up
contained an error, saying "File not found!"
This looks a bit un-professional, but it didn't
take away from the game. The MOTD screen worked
before, the error started happening very
recently. The overall score is a 7/10
4. Game Overall Graphics
The graphics are the
best graphics I have ever seen in any MMORPG,
even Rappelz. It's not just the character design
graphics that get me, even though those are
great, but its the entire game. The scenery
is beautiful, the use of nature, like rivers and
trees is seamless, and the overall game world is
beautiful. Comparing this to WoW for the first
time in the review, Perfect World's graphics are much more
serious and realistic. The
graphics are also better-looking in general.
However, the graphics for spells are not too special.
You see a cool animation
and *BAM!* something happens. The overall score
is a 9/10.
5. Character Creation
This is where the game shines. Creating a
character is as comprehensive as creating one in
the Sims 2. You can change everything and I
mean everything! You could change the shape of
the person's eye, the length of his/her nose, the
width of his/her hips, the eye color, the mouth
size, etc. The only part that I didn't like was
the hair. All of the hair styles looked like
what an American would stereotype an Asian to
look like such as spiky hair, crazy hair, a bald head,
and a bald head with dots on it, etc. The overall
score is a 9.5/10
6. Gameplay
Finally, how the game is played! This is the
game's strongest point. I honestly can't find
anything bad to say. The amount of quests is
amazing and it tunes down on grinding
significantly. In comparison to the quests in
WoW, Perfect World's quests are much higher quality.
Instead of
just "Kill _________ 'x' many times!" Or "Find
_______, go quickly!" you'll find yourself
leveling while having fun doing the quests. Combat
is a bit slower paced than games that take a
second to kill monsters. You actually get a
battle sequence, unless you're a much higher
level then the monster you're attacking. In that
case the monster will take a hit and drop dead.
Casting spells is also a bit slow since there is a spell
preparation time. Like in WoW, once the bar
fills up, the spell is cast. As far as support
is concerned, GMs are very active
and helpful. There are also no hackers that I
have ever met. The overall score
is a 10/10.
--->FINAL STATEMENT<---
If you want to play a very fun and addictive
game that very well could take up a load of your
time, then Perfect World! If you don't want to get
hooked, then stay far away! You may experience
patch problems, or small errors, but the
developers team is very fast at responding to any
concerns.
