From retro classics to modern RPGs, the fantasy genre has always been rife in video games. There’s something immensely appealing about entering a world of magic and defeating an evil figure to save the day. But which are the very best fantasy video games of all time? Read on to find out.

Final Fantasy X

You’ll find fantasy games in various styles of games, including platform games and beat ’em ups. There are even online fantasy games like Thunderstruck II, which you can play at casumocasino.dk. Today, modern fantasy games are mostly synonymous with role-playing games. One of the best RPGs is Final Fantasy X.

The tenth game in the incredibly popular Final Fantasy series published by Square Enix isn’t only the best of the series. It’s also one of the best fantasy video games of all time. This RPG takes place in the fantasy world of Spira. Following the story of a group of adventurers on a quest to defeat the evil monster Sin, you play the star athlete Tidus as he battles through Spira to find and destroy the rampaging Sin. When Final Fantasy X came onto the scene in 2001, it was a massive evolution for the game series. With a more tactical battle system, amazing 3D backgrounds, voice acting, and expressive character models, this offers exceptionally enticing gameplay. But it’s the story and the characters that make this truly one of the best fantasy games of all time. When you get hit emotionally or physically in this game, you really feel it!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The earlier Witcher games were pretty good, but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is on an entirely different level. It was released in 2015 and won numerous Game of the Year awards. It has since become known as one of the greatest video games ever made. Based on The Witcher series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, this spectacular RPG plays in an open world from a third-person perspective. Playing as either Geralt, or Rivia, it’s your mission to save your missing daughter who is on the run from an otherworldly force who wants to capture her for her magical powers. By navigating the game’s dangerous situations with your magic and weapons, you just might save the day. There are several story endings to The Witcher 3. Indeed, it’s the storytelling of this game that makes it so immersive and unique.

Gauntlet II

If you were in an arcade in the eighties, chances are you were queuing up to play one of the best fantasy video games of the era: Gauntlet II. Launched as an arcade game in 1986 by Atari, this sequel to the previous year’s Gauntlet is a top-down dungeon crawler game that allows up to four players to take on the roles of Warrior, Valkyrie, Elf or Wizard. It was so popular back in the day that it’s since become available on 86 different devices. You begin the game by entering a dungeon. You then have to navigate hundreds of levels, all of which contain masses of different enemies that you must defeat. The object of each level is to find the exit, which isn’t as easy as it sounds. The exits move on many levels. By collecting food, magic, and power-ups, you can endure more extended gameplay.

Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn

Set in the Forgotten Realms, this sequel to Baldur’s Gate was released in 2000. Based on the rules of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons’ second edition rules, a vast number of excellent features were added to this sequel after the game’s maker BioWare collated feedback on the original. New features included 3D support, high resolution, and character kits. The story follows the protagonist Gorion’s Ward as he faces the sinister and powerful Jon Irenicus. With an isometric perspective and the ability to pause real-time gameplay, along with amazing graphics and engaging voice acting, Shadows of Amn is considered to be one of the best role-playing games of all time.

  1. Final Fantasy is a pretty obvious franchise to pick; Final Fantasy X isn’t as great as Final Fantasy VI or Final Fantasy VII in my opinion, but it is still pretty good. It’s essentially the same RPG experience more or less.
