Over in the "Introductions" forum, I commented about creating a list of Linux games.

The concept I was presenting there was MMO gaming and I feel that emulation isn't my goal because emulation means I still need Windows versions of games.

No need to post about Flash games which work in Linux, that list is already posted.

Aaddron offered some assistance, and I was hoping other members could raise the level of knowledge a bit by posting about what works in Linux with NO emulation.

Aw Dang. We are back to Windows emulation for EVE.

I know of Egoboo, NetHack, Eternal Lands, and The Mana World, and Aaddron offered Second Life, Planeshift, Regnum.

That makes 7 games to research (I'm not yet sure they are all MMO, I'll check as time permits).

Somebody help me here - I'm too old to do this all by myself.

Yes, I'm still researching what has been posted, spreadsheet has 6 entries and I haven't added all that has been posted here. I'm slowly trying to verify that my list will contain reasonably accurate entries for games that run in Linux without an emulator. I'm probably not going to try out every game, but I will at least make certain it is currently active and so on. I will likely have to trust their self descriptions for whether they are MMORPG or MMOFPS, etc.

Just REALLY busy looking for a job, ATM: bills are piling up etc.

I wanted to explore MMO gaming in Linux. If anything most of the games I can install from my repo are just BARELY online games for up to 4 players.

IIRC, only 5 or so games in my repo are MMO. One of those MMO game packages in my repository is a client for The Mana World, the client in my repo is no longer supported by the game servers (repo client was packaged in 2007 and the repo hasn't been updated since).

As for using ubuntu repos (or anyone elses repos) with my distro, no, I don't dare wreck my OS because I'm trying to find jobs while using it. I see people over in gOS forums are trying to use ubuntu 8.10 repos for gOS and gOS states it requires 8.04 repos only, and after they use the wrong repo in gOS, they post complaining how the stuff they've installed whacked everything else..... sorry, that's not for me, I NEED my OS to remain STABLE!

And I don't feel I have the skills for packaging stuff for the repo.

Still interested in hearing of others, if anyone wants to add more.

 

Oh, I wasn't really intending to jump on you over that "repo" post. I'm ok with your post, sorry if I came across in a personal manner. I just feel that I have to come on very strong against the idea of mixing repos, so as to help innocent readers understand how mixing repos would not be a good idea. I admit that sometimes I come on too strong (as I did there), but then again, I've been using Linux for 10 years, and I've been posting in Linux forums all the way - being strong about something quickly becomes a habit. I have a few scorch marks, know what I mean?

Well, I knew it was coming, but now it is here, I have to drop this project. Apologies that I didn't get very far, but I give what I completed.

The most important points are to verify that the games own website actually provides a link to SOMETHING for Linux - source, packages (DEBs, RPMs), tarballs, SOMETHING.

Along the way, I encountered references to Windows or Mac versions, but I wasn't obligated to provide Win/Mac data ... BECAUSE ... my request was about mmo for Linux!

Ok, the information I post below is evidently in tab separated format when I copy it out of this post; Open Office spreadsheet imports it from my clipboard as tab separated format. Just copy the info, switch to OO, use Ctrl-shift-V, select 'paste as unformatted text' and the OO 'text import' wizard thingy shows up. For me, OO is set for import type 'Separated by tab' but better to make sure. This next part of importing the data is rather important: be sure that when you are still in the wizard, set all columns as column type 'text'. Otherwise, the version number columns might become formatted as dates (they do, trust me, I been there) and you might never be able to undo the conversion to date format.

Last but not least, I played Gaiaonline for about a month, MOSTLY compatible with Linux since it is a Flash based system. I was not able to place my furniture in my house, because the furniture placement page seems to require EXACTLY 32 bit Windows (no worky for 32 bit Linux, no worky for XP64). I'm giving up on Gaia because of the immature kiddies in the town: all the males saying 'shaddap biotch' or trash talking and it seemed that most of the girls I met were looking for cyber---, bleh. I don't want that stuff. Also, Gaia is converting to cash based game items, looking like they are rapidly dropping using Gaia Gold.
