In your opinions, do you think perma-death could work in many mainstream games?

What held you back on this game? Was it the graphics or something else?

You don't get much more mainstream than Diablo, and hardcore permadeath mode has been in since Diablo 2.

I think the option of permadeath can improve a game, nothing that's forced on the player, mind. Just an option you can choose before you start playing. It makes a game more interesting by bringing in a new challenge that you can't just power through.

Sadly, I don't think real permadeath is a viable option for MMO style games, thanks to griefers and John Gabriel's Greater Internet Jerkwad Theory.

I agree. Jerks will take advantage of permadeath just to not be bored:(.

Or just because they can. Google up "Burn Jita" to see what truly organized permadeathish griefing looks like. In the thousands. For a weekend and change. Straight.

Death is a little more forgiving in Diablo 3, at least in normal.

To be fair, Diablo 3 is a lot more forgiving, overall. Even Hardcore is kind of easy. I think they learned some lessons from D2 where monsters sometimes rolled up that would kill character instantly (yay Iron Maiden death knights!) or couldn't be killed (Physical Immune, Magic Immune, Extra Fast, whee!).

Then again, dead characters buy no goodies from the auction house.

True, Diablo 3 does seem to be easier to play than previous games in the series.
