Like others have said, it really depends on what you call an "Online RPG." Would you lump MMORPGs in under that umbrella, or wouldn't you?

I personally agree with awesomedrako's post on the first page. MMORPGs are still technically online RPGs, just much larger than traditional RPGs used to be. As for smaller RPGs, they're not necessarily dying, but I think they're being eclipsed by the bigger-name titles out there. They still exist but they have a smaller, more dedicated fanbase than a large MMORPG might. Take MUDs/MUSHes, for example. Those are far from mainstream these days in most gaming communities, but that doesn't mean they're gone. :)

So, I don't think online RPGs are dying out. Quite the contrary.

It is not that simple because when Diablo 3 go ONLINE all who liked Diablo 2 will go and play it and many other. There are some good RPG's and some stupid.

Online RPGs are not dying. the genre is just changing to account for changes in interest and new technologies. A prime example is when I go back to try and play the MUDs I used to love when I was younger. Back then those games were close to the limits that technology allowed but now with more options and better tech to support new ideas, what is acceptable or enjoyable is shifting.

Well said :D. I will agree. I don't think big MMORPGs are the future either.

MMOFPS could be the future if combined with RPGs.

Would like to make an Ogre-Style Online RPG someday. We had a game called Ogre RPG, but that plug-in messed up.

The genre it self is not dying. The problem are the games and of course the taste of the players.

There are so many online RPGs being developed and being released right now and the masses are scattered.

For example I'm still playing Cabal, and it is a very old game but I still play it because I simply enjoy it. And in my personal opinion some of the other games don't provide me with the enjoyment.

It's sad really. Players today like an all out action rather than grinding, I guess MOBA games has greatly influenced the gaming industry.

Are you referring to Online RPG, the one like Dungeon and Dragons style? Like a narrative RPG game on forums? is that what you mean?
