I would say stick to the same color schemes, or as close to the same color schemes as possible, and choose a set that nobody else has tried out.

For example, when I'm looking for a set that matches Ebon Talon Armor, I look for black and gold designs like the hood and cloak from Shadowskull Tower, Witch Gloves and Boots from the Mogloween event, and a weapon that has some gold like Sworn Oath.

You can also try out bizarre sets, especially whenever the new customization options come out for the game with facial hair and more color options. That should offer a lot more variety.

I'm not sure what gender you are but if you're a female make a set using the Witch robe if you have it, it looks really good on females.

I personally go for strange, yet visually distinct.
for Example My current Gear set is as follows, Plague Dr. Mask, Red Dragon Plate, Red Cape, Heated Shoulderpads, Wolf Wrangler's Gloves, Wolfskin Belt, and the Plutocrat boots, with whatever weapon I feel like using at that time(Usually the CSoA)!!
