It's hard to believe it, but Minecraft has been out for over 6 years now and is still a strong game today. It hasn't surpassed the popularity of Tetris yet, but it is the second best-selling video game of all time.

With the game moving to various consoles and other platforms, I don't expect this game to die off anytime soon. In fact, I expect this game to last perhaps another 6 years, or even longer before its popularity will begin to noticeably decline. With VR on the rise and newer 3D games, especially modded games, it might not be long until Minecraft faces some competition with another game.

What do you think about Minecraft's growing popularity?

Minecraft is an astonishing game, breaking several records. Mincecraft proves that the average person isn't just interested in the best current graphics. It took the gaming community by storm when it first came out and hasn't quite died off yet and doesn't look like it ever will tbh, at least not completely.

I think it will last a long time. The popularity might die down, less people will be playing it but it'll always be known and remembered just like Tetris

I think it will surpass Tetris in sales, it seems the craze has slowed some but it's still selling well and with continued updates, it should pass it eventually. Assuming Microsoft doesn't ruin it.

It probably will eventually, as long as it receives regular updates and new content.

It certainly could happen because i don't see Minecraft dropping in popularity enough to make it impossible.

I think minecraft will die down when a new game similar to it with better graphics is made.

Also, from what i noticed, it is still very popular with the kids.

minecraft is a very amazing game. i honestly think it can last for more than a decade if they keep updating the game. people going back to play the game for memories is enough to keep the game going.

youtubers like ssundee also keeps the game alive.

MineCraft has had quite a lot of significant updates, even to this date. I remember a lot of people talking about ray tracing, which I don't think fundamentally changes the game, but just changes the experience. And anyone who hasn't played in years will definitely find the game to be a lot different than before. I remember taking a break (some time after they introduced shields) and when I revisited the game, I was attacked by phantoms at night.

For its main genre, sure. There are a lot of Minecraft clones and they are nowhere near as close as Minecraft is. But for games in general, I do think some games could succeed above Minecraft since there are millions of possibilities for uniqueness. Minecraft doesn't really have specific subgenres, so players have to build creations and invent those subgenres themselves, and there aren't really competitive tournaments which seems to be the success of some newer games.
