It's nice when you get a lot of people to work together on something. People usually do things alone, but it's fun to get people to work together. That is, until you find diamonds...

Some people are touchy about their stuff. It's not like anyone could have known that 6-month old town was built into the other side of the mountain they just TNT'd into low-earth orbit.

You'd think they'd post signs or something.

Those closest answer on the poll there is building, but what I like to do is collect monsters. You see, monsters are pretty predictable, and with a little effort and some quick building, you can sucker them into little monster pens.

Build a catwalk safely above the growling murder below, and you have a nice little monster garden.

You can also throw down glass around monsters, penning them up in a pillar of pixel fury. It's a great way to surprise your friends when they come home.

Crafting a redstone railway that rolls from the major town to dump directly into the monster pen is going above the call of duty, though.

The survival aspect is pretty neat. It's like your starting a little life in a whole new world.

It would be really nice if Mojang put some NPCs with personality and character and their own stories in the world, though.

But won't it turn into another regular single/multiplayer rpg then?

Oh, and if you do want that, go check out shaboozey.com and the rpgmakers map, it has npcs and quests and stuff :)

It's not like the NPCs are there to give you quests and send you after the dragon or anything. They're just other people, bouncing around the world. People you can get to know, people you can protect from monsters. They would need to be interactive, maybe recognize things you've done. A diamond sword should impress. That sort of thing.

More neighbors than quest givers, ya know?

Start with the Creeper AI for pathing, those things could thread a needle in a hurricane. I've literally had them running mazes to explode me.

But, um, drop the Creeper AI once they're in ground zero range. No one needs exploding neighbors. It ruins the backyard parties.

Creeper AI is indeed Way better than the Testificate AI (basically: wander around aimlessly and run inside when the sun sets, though they will be selling and buying as of 1.3)

That's cool. Anything the helps increase the ways the player can interact with the game is probably a good thing. Minecraft is a little strange. That feeling of being alone in a vast world is really something. Then, you build your skull fortress, you raise your fields of plants and pigs, and you flood the rest of the world with lava. Now the master of all you survey, the fortress seems a little empty, those victories ring hollow with no one to tell of them.

NPCs need to be in the game, but they should come gradually. Tamed land and big construction attracts them. I think that would be best.

    Sort of like in Terraria?

I'm fully with you on this btw, it gets so lonely in the huge houses you built

I'm not really familiar with Terraria, how does that one work?

Yes, that loneliness is a problem, I think. What use is a skull fortress without minions and a village to terrorize?

If you build it, they will come... ok it's not quite that simple. They have requirements like to get the Merchant you must have at least 50 silver... then like all NPCs except the guide (he's basically a no good freeloader who moves himself in with you) you build them a house or room in your house that's of a certain size, lighting and two items... one "Flat Surface" like a table and one "Comfort" like a chair. He will then randomly appear and move in.
