Well, but that's 5700+ posts over two and a half years. Easy enough to earn them and then be inactive and only slowly add to them.

Hmm, I was a site-wide mod for a couple years (until quite recently because I haven't been on as much as I used to). You don't ask to be a mod, for one thing. You either are super active and asked to be one, or you apply when there is a need for a mod in a section and Ogre asked. If you have to ask for a mod position that's just silly :p Reminds me of this one kid at my school who sits next to me in one of my computer classes and complains all day how he's so popular on a forum but isn't a moderator.

I started out in the Splashfighers section, and also the MUD section shortly after (as it was sort of deserted and I'm the one of the few people interested in it.) Then later on there was a bout of spam so I helped out around the entire forum with spam (although not with the other moderation things except in MUDs). Sort of worked my way up.

Overall, it was a very awesome experience. I got to help out one of my favorite sites, after all.

Oh, story time? I can do story time :)

I started out as an active forum gamer, and eventually ogre wanted to do some cleanup of the area, and I volunteered, and so there I was, mod of the section. Then cleanup was over, moderation power gone. Then a new series of reforms were supposed to be coming, and the section didn't have a dedicated moderator that was entirely active, so I was offered the position again, so I took it.

Then when ogre was going off to..... GDC Austin I think it was, and he's like wanna help keep an eye on the site while I'm gone? Sure, why not? So I ended up with forum-wide mod powers. And I picked up blogs mod powers semi-recently because I found a bunch that was being posted back through time, and ogre didn't have the time to do it all himself.

So.... the moral of my story is be active and trustworthy? And just happen to be around when you're needed? I guess. I don't really know. It just sort of happened to me.

Activity is one of the most important factors in becoming a mod. Becoming a mod when you first start rarely seems to work. For a story, one member would pop in every few months or so ask to be a mod or admin, promises he will stay forever, and then pop back out again lol. Not exactly mod material:).

Why not? He left because you didn't make him a mod! He might have stayed if you had ;)

(another thing a mod needs, the ability to stay on-topic when necessary, guess why I am no mod lol)

much better to just be active and be asked when something is needed. Asking is usually a good way to not get something like this.

Good point, Pure. We usually ask for a mod to fill in gaps or they just start helping to the point where they should be a mod:).
