I once accepted this guy on Facebook I had heard the name and we had some mutual friends but I didn't really know him. Then soon after I accepted him he started doing weird shit like posting "Jesse is in a relationship with Jesse's right hand"... if you get that reference. And then like a week later he posted on my wall (keep in mind I've never spoken to the guy in my life) "I'm watching you". This guy also became the first and only person I have ever blocked on Facebook.

Identity theft is quite common, but I haven't actually seen it happen that often, only once or twice as far as I remember.

The last time I have seen it happen was two years ago.

I occasionally kept contact by mail with an American player of my old game Shugo. About two years ago I all of the sudden got a weird mail from him about some pyramid scheme. Knowing that he was an American I found it odd that his English was incredibly bad. For example there were all sorts of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes in that email. That's what made me realise that it couldn't be him. Someone had stolen his hotmail account. I traced the original IP address of whoever had sent that email and discovered that it came from an internetcafe in Hong Kong. I informed my American friend on an irc chatroom and I also reported it on the FBI website.

I discovered that reporting this kind of stuff to the authorities is actually very hard. First of all the Dutch justice department has no such website where you can fill in forms about identity theft and since I hadn't actually fallen victim to a crime myself, because that pyramid scheme didn't fool me, I couldn't actually report it to the Dutch authorities. The American authorities only have the FBI website where you can report ID theft and other internet crime related stuff, but these forms are incredibly complicated and messy, and that website is tediously slow. It must have taken me more than an hour just to figure out what goes where and how to actually report it.

 

IDTheft should be stopped.
