    I borrow money from my mom $500
    I borrow money from my dad $500

    I buy a bag that costs $970, now I have $30 left

    Then, I give it back to my mom $10, my dad $10, and I keep $10

    Now, I owe my mom and dad; $490 each person.


    total 490+490 = $980 and I still have money that I keep $10

    Where is my $10 ?

    You're doing math on the wrong end, that's what. Let's say you gave them each 5 more dollars, and left yourself with nothing. Then you'd owe them 485 each, totaling 970. That's how much you paid for the thing.
