The launch of Trion Worlds' MMORPG Rift: Planes of Telara is around the corner and RipTen just sat down with Trion Worlds' Design Producer Hal Hanlin, and asked him a fairly challenging question: why Rift is different than World of Warcraft?

Blizzard's flagship MMORPG has been in the market for 6 years while Rift is just about to release, so it will be unrealistic to say that Rift is better than WOW. But it's undeniable that Rift has its uniqueness that enable the game to capture a good number of WOW's market shares. As Hal Hanlin points out, players are in a constantly changing world where they will encounter lots of unexpected events. And for those who don't like the dungeon finder system or feel hard to find a group for raid, Rift has the solution that you don't need to be invited, you directly jump into the raid by simply pressing one button. Of course, your rewards are based on your contribution in the group.

These features are cool indeed but how will those designs actually work in game is another story. Fortunately, Rift has been tested and improved after phases of closed betas and the developer Trion World themselves are ambitious enough. Let's hope that one day, the dream of "We're Not In Azeroth Anymor" will come true.
