    how hard is it to make games on the atari 2600 and how long does it take to make a game like princess rescue?

    I would imagine that it would require having the hardware for it and some programs.

    I'm certain you'd have to learn Assembly (or some machine-level code) to make games on the Atari 2600.

    You'll also need to understand how to interface with the hardware (rendering scanlines on clock cycles / time slicing, deciding how to use Assembly instructions with a limited amount of registers since you're using older hardware, etc.).

    But you might be able to find modern tools and tutorials that can simplify the process. I'd recommend this tutorial to begin with.
