I discovered something new today about audio support in browsers.

Read it, learn, and weap about the pitiful support for sound.

    1. Firefox version 21 or lower does not support MP3 files in the html5 audio tag.
    2. Firefox version 22 or higher does support MP3 files in the html5 audio tag.
    3. Internet Explorer 8 or lower does not support MP3 files in the html5 audio tag.
    4. Internet Explorer does not support WAV files in the html 5 audio tag.
    5. Support for MP3 files in the html 5 audio tag in Internet Explorer 9 or higher is broken. It only works with autoplay.
    6. Support for WAV files in Chrome and Firefox is broken. Any WAV file shorter than 20 seconds will not play in Chrome and Firefox.

I have several browsers installed, if one doesn't support it, the other will.

Also chrome no longer plays short sounds like 5 seconds sounds-ish or lower.

So for example you can't play a notification sound or anything like that. i guess you could with a custom player not with the audio tag but yeah... it messed up with some of my code all of a sudden.

Obsolete browsers just aren't recommended, for security, lack of support, or even performance. And Internet Explorer 8 is definitely not a browser I'd recommend using at this point.

Stick to the latest versions of Firefox Quantum, latest versions of Chrome/Chromium browsers, etc. Audio codecs for various audio types (.wav, .ogg, etc.) are more likely to be supported in those browsers. And if for some reason they aren't, you might be able to find a browser extension to support whatever file type you need to process.
