Left 4 Dead

Left 4 Dead (abbreviated L4D) is a singleplayer and multiplayer co-operative survival horror FPS game developed by Valve Corporation. The game was built using Source engine and is available on PC and Xbox 360. During early development, its working title was "Terror Strike."

Story:

Left 4 Dead begins in Pennsylvania, following an outbreak of so-called "Green Flu", a highly transmittable virus which manifests itself as massively increased aggression and the loss of many higher brain functions within its victim. Two weeks after the infection of Patient Zero, four immune survivors of the outbreak make their way through the city of Fairfield, only to discover that the virus is creating new, even more dangerous mutations. After narrowly avoiding these new infected, along with hordes of others, the survivors are alerted to the presence of an evacuation point at the nearby Mercy Hospital by a passing news helicopter. Fighting their way through the city's streets, subway and sewers, the survivors are rescued from the hospital's roof by the pilot, only to discover that he is succumbing to the infection. (No Mercy) With Zoey forced to kill the pilot, the helicopter crash lands in an industrial district outside the city. Finding a delivery truck that has been armored by other survivors, the group decides to use it to make their way to the town of Riverside (Crash Course). Before arriving in the town however, they find the road blocked, and are forced to travel the rest of the way on foot. Following an encounter with an infected madman in the local church, they discover that the town is overrun, and decide to head to a nearby boathouse for possible rescue. Contacting a small fishing vessel, they manage to reach the city of Newburg on the other side of the river, only to find much of it in flames (Death Toll).

Seeking cover in a large greenhouse, their rest is interrupted when a military C-130 Hercules passes overhead, leading the survivors to travel through the city's business district towards Metro International Airport. Upon arrival, the group is shocked to see that in an attempt to contain the infection, the military had bombed the airport; the runway however is largely intact, allowing the survivors to fuel up and escape in the waiting C-130 (Dead Air). Despite this apparent rescue, the survivors once again find themselves alone on the outskirts of Allegheny National Forest. Following a series of train tracks through the area, the group find themselves at a functioning, but abandoned, military outpost. After answering a radio transmission, the survivors make their final stand against hordes of infected, before a military APC arrives to transport them to Northeast Safe Zone, supposedly the only location in the area yet to be overrun (Blood Harvest).

Gameplay:

The game puts four human playable or AI-controlled Survivors of an apocalyptic pandemic against hordes of the Infected. Regular Infected are controlled by the game AI, while human players can control up to four mutated Special Infected with special abilities in Versus mode. The goal of Left 4 Dead for the Survivors is to help each other make it through a level to safety. Infected players must cooperate to stop them. The intense four-player online co-op experience utilized a dynamic "AI Director" to adjust the undead onslaught according to player performance. The basic gameplay never changes from map to map, so players will learn their way around fairly quickly. The Director keeps things from getting monotonous, however, by throwing in different challenges in every level. No two playthroughs are exactly alike.

Special Infected:

Hunter

The Hunter always appears in a dark grayish-blue hooded sweatshirt and dark brown sweatpants. His hood is always pulled down and over his face, disguising his lack of eyes. The limbs of his outfit are battened down by duct tape. Hunters are primarily identified by their distinctive growl, or the screams and snarls they emit upon sighting a Survivor or pouncing or clawing. They are, however, the only Special Infected who do not make any noise while in a neutral pose.

The Hunter is the least visibly mutated Special Infected, and still superficially resembles a human. It has yet to be explained how the Hunter's mutations onset, whether it be genetic, biochemical, or a hunter-specific strain of the virus, but the mutations seem to be gender-linked as only male Hunters have been observed. The Hunter's reaction to the Infection has granted him an increase in lower body strength. While not creating massive muscle growth like the Tank, this added strength has given the Hunter the ability to repeatedly jump and pounce from long distances and rapidly scale the sides of buildings with ease. Decreased pain response visible in all sufferers of the Infection also results in the Hunter not suffering from perpetual lactic acid buildup from muscle overexertion. At the same time, there seems to be some sort of muscle delay after an initial attack (charge attack back up) where the Hunter is not able to move as swiftly. One of the most notable physical observations is that the Hunter lacks eyes. Whether this is self-inflicted, by-product of the Infection, or both is unknown.

The extent of damage to the Hunter's sight suggests his other senses are far more developed than those of typical Infected, allowing him to hunt with far greater efficiency. It is possible that the screeching noises he makes and the growling are his own echolocation method. He might also use scent to tell the Survivors apart from Infected. As with the other Special Infected, he is not distracted by such high frequency noises as Pipe bombs or car alarms going off. Hunters also appear to be the only Infected with a self defense reflex: when shot at a distance and knowing it cannot pounce, the Hunter will sometimes jump away into safety.

Boomer

The Boomer has short black hair and appears in stained sweatpants and a navy sweater which is stretched to breaking point by its vast gut, making it instantly recognizable from a distance. It makes belching and gurgling noises whilst in neutral pose, and groans when it sights a Survivor

The Boomer has been heavily mutated by the Infection. It has become extremely bloated to the point that the slightest of ruptures to its flesh will cause it to explode, sending the bile, blood, and other contents of its body everywhere. This is due to the Infection creating large amounts of specialized bile to build up within its body under high pressure. Massive boil-like growths have appeared upon its skin, indicating that it may still be expanding. Its bile has the unique characteristic of attracting hordes of Infected upon coming into contact with non-Infected human flesh, possibly through the use of pheromones. Similar to the other Special Infected, it is not distracted by high frequency noises such as pipe bombs or car alarms going off.

The Boomer's primary attack is to launch a stream of vomit which can hit multiple Survivors that are close to it. If it is killed it will explode, causing Survivors (and Infected) close to it to stagger and become covered with bile. Survivors hit by Boomer bile will be blinded (losing outlines of their teammates as well) and will instantly attract a Horde to attack them, as well as any individual Common Infected who happen to be in the area. Multiple Survivors hit by Boomer bile will not each attract a Horde to them; the one Horde will instead attack all of them.

Smoker

The Smoker is an Infected with a long, whip-like tongue. The Smoker's tongue can be launched out of its mouth at high speeds, and when it reaches one of the Survivors, it automatically wraps around the target's body and drags him/her back toward the Smoker.

The Smoker has been heavily mutated by a strain of the Infection and frequently makes high-pitched rasping and coughing noises that can alert Survivors of its presence. Though it resembles most Common Infected, it is taller, more durable, and its skin has become covered in growths that cause little spurts of green smoke and blood to ooze out when shot. It is said that the smoke it expels gives off a putrid smell, but it is otherwise harmless. The left side of its face is bloated and appears to be covered by a large tumor. In Left 4 Dead he can be seen wearing a white shirt with a green jacket along with jeans and converse-like sneakers. Though its mentality is similar to that of the typical Infected, it is not distracted by things such as the flashing lights of pipe bombs, nor is it attracted by car alarms going off.

When constricted, Survivors have a brief momentto shoot the offending Smoker before their arms are ensnared by the tongue. If they fail, the Survivor is helplessly dragged off, and will take damage until they die or are rescued through the use of a melee attack, the tongue being severed or the death of the Smoker. The Smoker claws at an ensnared Survivor when they are dragged all the way back to him, while at the same time the Survivor takes damage from the tongue constricting them if an obstacle obstructs them from being dragged to the Smoker. If a Survivor isn't dragged all the way back to a Smoker due to an obstruction ,the Survivor will only take damage from the tongue's squeeze. When killed, a Smoker leaves a haze of dark green smoke, obscuring the vision of the Survivors and causing them to cough if they stand in it.

Tank

The Tank is a Special Infected of gigantic proportions. The Infection has caused a huge amount of muscle growth, granting it an extreme amount of strength. This monster is capable of punching large items such as cars into the air or throwing blocks of concrete it rips out of the ground at Survivors, and bashing through otherwise impenetrable walls (including the Safe Room). The Tank keeps a high profile, able to be heard by the Survivors from a great distance due to its loud roars, shaking ground when running, and its distinct theme when attacking. The Tank is designed to make the Survivors panic and split up into different directions so that other Special Infected may get to snatch you alone; this happens commonly among new players. It is also designed to absorb lots of damage and still be able to run towards the Survivors. The immense strength and incredible toughness of the Tank make it a terrible foe in combat, especially to inexperienced or uncoordinated Survivors.

The Tank has been heavily mutated by a strain of the infection. It has developed immense, thick muscles that not only indicate its incredible strength and endurance, but make it nearly bulletproof, resulting in extreme fire-power being needed to take one down. However, this increase in muscular tissue makes it a large target and, like other Infected, is highly flammable. Its mind has also been heavily affected, making it extremely bloodthirsty even for an Infected. It could also be said that the Tank is in a constant state of rage, hence its preferred form of attack of charging the Survivors and pummeling them to death. Because of this rage the Tank will not hesitate to kill or throw objects out of its path, including other Infected, in order to get to the Survivors. It is not affected by minor distractions such as the flashing lights on pipe bombs, and does not appear to be attracted by car alarms going off.

Witch

The Witch is a member of the Infected, and the only one initially passive to the Survivors. She is also the only non-playable Special Infected, deemed to be "too dangerous" by Valve. She resembles a long, white haired Infected with a torn-at-the-stomach shirt along with white underwear, with long, sharp claws for fingers. The Witch makes loud and eerie noises which resemble sobbing when in her 'passive' state. The noise can be heard long before the Witch is ever seen, allowing the player a chance to prepare a plan to deal with her. In the nighttime she crouches and slumps over, mostly immobile.

When a Survivor gets too close to a Witch or damages her without killing her outright, she becomes 'startled'. When she is startled, she screams and advances on the Survivor that has startled her with great haste. Once she has reached the Survivor, she will slash at him/her, instantly incapacitating him/her. If the Survivor is incapacitated by her attack, she will continue to claw at him/her until either the Survivor or the Witch herself is dead. If she is still alive and the Survivor is dead, she will run off sobbing out of sight.

Due to her mutation, the Witch has gained a massive increase in strength, enabling her to incapacitate or instantly kill Survivors in one hit. Her strength is not visible via muscle growth, unlike the Tank. She is known to cry when not aware of the Survivors, though the exact reasoning behind it is unknown. It is possible that it was an evolutionary advantage, meant to lure unsuspecting survivors to her, as further demonstarted in the intro of Left 4 Dead when Bill and Zoey go to investigate her crying, thinking she may be a survivor. Even though her mentality is largely similar to that of the typical Infected, she is not distracted by things like the flashing lights and beeps of a pipe bomb. She is also not apparently attracted by things such as car alarms going off, though this will alert her of the Survivors' presence.
