Minecraft "bedrock edition" is the new client for Xbox, Windows 10, Nintendo Switch, Mobile Devices that will bring everyone (minus-java PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Vita, Wii U and PS4 until Sony decided to allow cross-play) together under one version. Read more about that here:

    Minecraft Better Together Update

The beta has opened for Xbox One and Windows 10 Digital Edition owners. To join on a Xbox or Windows 10 PC, go to the Store (Windows 10 Store) and download "Xbox Insider Hub". Open that, sign in with a Xbox Live account and it should have an option to join the test. Once joined you'll download the new client, on Xbox it's labelled "Minecraft", on Windows 10 it's currently labelled Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition.

The biggest part of this beta is playing the game on the new "bedrock engine" as well as getting a feel for some of the changes like the new crafting interface. On consoles it brings unlimited worlds, server support (for official servers), realms support for your own private servers and a increased player count for multiplayer overall.

Played a bit of this on my Xbox One today, really cool it imports your saves. Have one way back from 360 edition that's progressed to Xbox One Edition and now this one. It's gone from a tiny world to unlimited. Game felt really good, 60FPS, super smooth. Crafting interface is different but I like it.

One thing I'm really looking forward to is the ability of LAN play, so say someone is playing Minecraft on the PC, someone else in the house could join via LAN on a Xbox and another via phone/tablet and another via Nintendo Switch. It's really cool how easy it will be for people to drop in/drop out on basically any device they have. This will work over the internet too, which is great as platform will no longer be a barrier to play with friends.
