    About 70% of mobile games use Unity, but I think it requires Unity Pro for mobile game development. Not really a whole lot of other options when working with Unity, and you just want to get started.

    There is O3DE, which I think was the successor's to Amazon's Lumberyard. Might be a good starting point for just playing around. Another option would be to use a Javascript framework, like React Native with OpenGL's GLView component. Python's Kivy framework is also a good start, and there are various examples out there like Pong.
