This particular forum is to discuss various aspects of online game development. Developers can create a thread discussing their games here but some area of development needs to be somewhere in the thread.

This sections covers all areas of online gaming including MMORPGs, shooters, Online RPGs and even flash games.

I'm wondering if someone here has an experience with developing mmorpg games in flash/flex. And if yes what you use as a backend.

I think you may be the only one Krasimir... We do have two "coder" people here, Quinn and Shugo, but I don't know whether they know how to use flash/flex.

I have no experience in flash and I have no idea if Quinn has any. I think he doesn't, but I could be very wrong.

I know a few persons that do have the experience, but noone who dwell on this forum.

    Flash/Flex

Hi, I'm a noob, but also a game developer, so my opinion isn't completely worthless. He he.

If I were making a 'serious' game, I'd use Ogre or Unity3d. They are fully 3d, kickass, robust game engines that run true 3d in your browser window.

Flash, Flex and Shockwave are for casual games. There are more plugin engines out there, too, but none I'd recommend.

Is Python any good for making games? It seems to be a great programming language to learn as a beginner.

Python is useful for programming games, it can and has been used for programming games. It is a very stable language and quite easy to learn. Python was developed by a Dutch guy who loved the monty python flying circus series, hence the name of the language. Its syntax is a bit like perl or php. It's more flexible than php, but easier than perl.

Utopia is an example of a game that was initially coded in perl, but recoded in python when the game was sold to an Irish company.

There is one great downside for python and online games though, it's not a great language for cronjobs or when you have a lot of automated updates on a regular basis. The upside is that it's more stable and will not give your server anything like those hated cgi errors or crashes.

We may go ahead and make Online Game Development a separate forum from Upcoming Games:).

That is Upcoming Games. This forum is more for discussing actual online game development such as resources used, looking for coders, and making a MMO.

Love some input on having a game republished for the players by the players

We are currently lobbying Aeria Games, Atlus & Square Enix to republish this well loved award winning MMORPG Fantasy Earth Zero, but if that is in the cards we are discussing pooling our funds to republish the game ourselves on our own server & run it on a volunteer bases. Basically a game for the players, from the players, controlled by the players. We would love any info about game development on games that have already been published & how to go about it. Do we need contracts with Square Enix, ball park on cost, what exactly would we need from programmers to get Fantasy earth Zero up. We are reaching out to the gaming community & would appreciate any help. We are currently 4000 strong and growing daily by the 100's so we already have a very determined growing fan base for this awesome game.
