Many games are open source, which means they are licensed so that anyone can edit or play the game, completely for free.

By becoming open source, a game can improve greatly with the help of many users who can edit or mod the game. There are many open source MMOs, including:

Tremulous

Plane Shift

Armagetron Advanced

In addition to being editable by anyone, non programmers can also have a say by giving advice to the people who are working on the project. Edited open source games are required to use the same licence as the original game, so that the game stays free no matter what.
