Umm.. you can use anything really, even MS Paint. But most people prefer Photoshop (I use CS4). Photoshop is really expensive though ($500+) so maybe you really don't want to go that direction. Of course, you can always torrent it like half the people I know do..

You can try GIMP, it's completely free and it's about the closest thing you'll find feature wise to photoshop without spending money. Only downside is it can be confusing due to it's layout.

There's also Paint.NET, I like that a bit better than GIMP, layout is simpler. Not as powerful though.

Ahem most people I know don't pay for photoshop (breaks out the list of other software) in america so ya... :D

    Torrents ftw?

[Other commonly torrented software-Sony Vegas Pro(extremely common), Camtasia Studio(an onscreen recorder), theres more like adobe programs i believe...]

Yeah most people torrent Photoshop due to its high price tag. Of course, I would never do such a thing.

Meh, it's like the only software I've ever torrented. Plus it's outdated (CS4 Portable). I'm not the type that goes and downloads Office 2010 the day it comes out, I actually buy stuff like that. But I don't have $600 lying around to spend on image software which I'm just using for fun.

The first time you use it the complicated layout can appear scary. But after a while it's not so bad, right now I find it somewhat easy.

After you get the hang of the basics, learning more advanced stuff is rather easy and can be self-taught. Don't give up!

If you're trying to cut an image out, don't use the pen tool. Here's what you do-

    1) Open up the image you want to cut out of (we'll call it "A")

    2) Open up a second white blank canvas in another tab, make it the exact same size (we'll call it "B")

    3) Use the rectangle select tool to select all of A. Then press CTRL+C to copy.

    4) Go into the B tab and press CTRL+V to paste. It will make a new layer. So now you have the white blank canvas as your bottom layer and your image pasted from A as the top layer.

    5) Use the magic wand tool to select all parts that you want cut out of the picture. Then press delete and it will delete them, revealing the white background on the layer below.

*You can mess around with magic wand settings to make the process quick. Nowadays I can usually do this in like a minute.

but if you want better result or less choppy parts, pen tool all the way.it just take longer and can be frustrating.
