Space Station 13 is an online MMO. Gameplay takes place in rounds, where the goals change depending on the mode.

SS13 takes place on a space shuttle. Players have to work to keep it running as meteors hit, bombs explode, and more.

There are several modes, including:

Traitor - One player has a secret objective. The others have to stop this secret objective.

Revolution - A few players have to kill the Captain and other important people.

Meteor - Everyone must survive the onslaught of meteors!

Restructuring - Players are picked to be murdered one by one. Watch out!

More, there are many more modes, such as zombie, also.

There are many complex things going around the station. Atmospherics, for example, is in charge of keeping the air breathable. They can release gases (good or bad), into the air. If there is no breathable air in an area, a light on the players screen will turn red. To continue without dieing, they need "internals", an oxygen tank and a mask. This will give them portable air.

Bomb making also is a common hobby. At Toxins, players can create bombs. This is done by doing the following steps:

Empty a tank - Players must use the heaters to empty a tank, in order to store the gas to light the bomb in.

Connect a tank - players connect a large plasma tank to a vent.

Prepare chambers - A source of fire must be added to the chambers, in order to ignite and heat the gas.

Release gases - Gases from the plasma tank are released into the chambers, and ignite.

Siphon gases - heated gasses are returned to the tank.

Connect tank - the small tank is filled with hot gas and connected to an igniter. The igniter can be a infared laser sensor, proximity sensor, timer, remote control, and a long distance version of any of these.

Genetics is another possible job. Here is the process of how to change the species:

Insert monkey into genetic modifier.

Open up genetic console screen.

Edit SE data

Change 14th block of data to a number below 800

Eject monkey (now human).

The inventory system can be hard at first (you can only use two hands, and have to manually switch the active hand a great deal), but many users get used to it quickly.

Griefing (the act of killing people randomly) is greatly frowned on. Many servers will ban players who set off bombs randomly, or murder others (except when it is their goal.) Several admin tools are present, such as the ability to see anyone who has held a bomb. Admins can also start special events and games.

Servers can be run off of the open source code using the BYOND Dream Daemon engine. It is recommended that users with slow internet and computer do not host servers, as it will create much lag.

Goonstation Dev is a server where the Goons are running a beta test on their new features. It has tons of new stuff, such as a less CPU intensive atmos system, less lag, trashcans, and a new chemistry system.
