The Spotlight shines on MMORPG Showdown 8!

Many tread through the world of MMORPGs with confusion and bewilderment by the amount of choice, often asking what to play. Well, to those I reply: GameOgre is here to assist! As you might have guessed this week’s spotlight is on the MMORPG Showdown #8, a battle of the best and greatest MMORPGs in recent times, as voted by you the users.

    Round One Matches

World of Warcraft vs. Star Wars the Old Republic
This was quite an interesting round which certainly surprised me. World of Warcraft ended up only just securing victory with forum voting remaining relatively close. Nevertheless, both these games have substantial positives and are definitely worth checking out.

    DC Universe vs. Marvel Heroes
This was a very interesting match with both games remaining quite similar and catering for the same audience. The voting came down to the wire with both sides putting up a valiant effort. Many of our members showed their support for their side, with Aaddron stating “Marvel Heroes is solid but DC Universe is at least a step above in my book…” Mordekaiser fired back, remarking “Marvel Heroes is better in my opinion.” This exciting match concluded with DCUO only just stealing the victory over Marvel Heroes.

    RaiderZ vs. Vindictus
An exciting duel with two heavy weights in their fields pitting it out for the claim of the best Action MMORPG. Whilst both may seem similar the community overwhelmingly voted for RaiderZ, ending in a decisive victory.

    Drakensang vs. Asura Force
A peculiar match that formed a Browser vs. Light Client test. The two games have relatively small playerbases but it’s the browser-based Drakensang that triumphed in the end, proving that browser-based games can be just as great.

    Minecraft vs. Eve Online
The match of two quite different yet so popular MMORPGs. Sadly the match result was expected, with Minecraft, an indie game widely loved here at GameOgre, easily acquiring the win and moving onto the next round.

    Maple Story vs. RuneScape
Two popular games that have consistently been in the showdown, and often facing off in the forums. In the end Maple Story faced crushing defeat with RuneScape easily progressing to the next round.

    Rift vs. TERA: Rising
Unquestionably an exciting match, two MMOs that boast innovative features and vast amounts of content. Nevertheless, TERA showed who was boss with the community pushing it to a large lead that resulted in victory for TERA.

    Guild Wars 2 vs. Neverwinter
The prime and most exciting match of Round One, two modern and fluid MMOs that have considerable support. From the onset it was unclear who would win, resulting in a seven page thread with both games intensely firing back at each other. Though, by the end Guild Wars who sped ahead and earned its place in round two.

    Round Two Matches

The good MMOs were eliminated by the great and so it became time for the greats to flex their muscles!

    Minecraft vs. World of Warcraft
Two of the most popular games currently in existence, a match of great importance. Heated discussion took place with both games proposing valid arguments, driving many who had never voted before to take part and have their say. Finally the tidal wave of World of Warcraft swept over the match, pushing aside Minecraft and successfully taking victory.

    DC Universe Online vs. RaiderZ
A battle of two unique submissions, the unique and exciting DCUO against the champion Action MMORPG RaiderZ. From start to finish DCUO swiftly took the lead and held on to it, its exceptionality gathered votes to push it through to the next round.

    Drakensang Online vs. RuneScape
Two of the greatest browser-based games out pitted against each other in a fight for their reputation. Drakensang surprisingly gathered large amounts of support but RuneScape captured the voters and gracefully won the match.

TERA: Rising vs. Guild Wars 2
A match of the established Guild Wars 2 against the enjoyable TERA: Rising. Both games offer exciting opportunities, with TERA boasting enjoyable PvE but Guild Wars 2 offering much more for endgame. Guild Wars 2 proved tough to beat as it usually does and successfully overtook TERA to gain the win.

    Semi-Final Matches

All but the best remained as we crept ever closer to finding the true MMORPG victor.

World of Warcraft vs. DC Universe
The well-rounded World of Warcraft versus the specialised DC Universe. Whilst catering for entirely different audiences both games provide entertainment for anyone looking to have some quick fun. However, World of Warcraft proved that it is the true classic that has constantly risen to the top, and this match proved no exception with DCUO submitting defeat.

    Guild Wars 2 vs. RuneScape
The deciding match that would dictate the Finals, a match that many watched with curious eyes. Guild Wars 2 in the modern era is an exceptional game and resultantly took the victory. The well rounded browser-based RuneScape holds memories for many, but GW2 harnesses a new kind of genre that is unquestionably fun. So forged ahead Guild Wars 2, irresistibly moving onto to its next challenge, World of Warcraft.

    Finals

    The clash of two titans.

World of Warcraft vs. Guild Wars 2
Guild Wars 1 vs World of Warcraft was the finals in the very first MMORPG Showdown, Guild Wars took the title and ultimately went on to be one of the few games to win the Showdown more than once. Following it's loss WoW's Showdown strength slowly drifted away and ultimately Guild Wars followed. Fast forward 8 years and World of Warcraft is back and is now facing not Guild Wars 1 but Guild Wars 2. A rejuvenated and fresh MMO that was a favorite to win the title this year.

World of Warcraft has long ruled the roost in the MMO space and in many ways it still does. In recent years the rise of F2P along with the age of World of Warcraft has cut into it's dominating lead, the once seemingly unbeatable giant started to show some cracks and slowly other MMOs were pulling users away. For all intensive purposes World of Warcraft is at a low point in it's life and is slowly winding down but World of Warcraft proved once again that it is not to be counted out, it's not done reigning supreme over the MMO verse and ultimately claimed it's first MMORPG Showdown crown.

Congratulation to Blizzard for building a game that has stood the test of time like no other and even today remains one of the most popular and profitable games in the industry. Well done WoW, you finally did it.

OK, I've done some examples. If you can add something just post it in this thread.

What we could use your help with is May and Coming In June releases, linking a few of the latest blog posts, and 4 more of the most recent giveaways.

This is what you'd do for example. If I wanted to add one of the recent blog posts and a May Release I'd post in this thread like so:

    May Releases

Wolfenstein: The New Order - May 20th

    GameOgre News

    AirMech First Impressions

It's not much work, we are mostly opening this up as a way for anyone to help with this.
