Utopia

Intro

Utopia is a free textbased game with a lot of deep strategy. Players can choose between a total of 7 races, such as: humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, gnomes, dark elves and avians and choose between a total of 8 personalities, such as: the merchant, the shepherd, the sage, the rogue, the mystic, the warrior, the war hero and the artisan.

Server

Upon registration you will have to create a province on the server called World of Legends. As of now (dec. 2009) there is only one server, but there used to be 2 more servers like Genesis and the Battlefields server.

Game History

Utopia is an old game and has been online since 1998, having won the people's voice webby award twice (1st time in 2001). Utopia was developed by Mehul Patel, who also developed games like earth 2025 (discontinued) and he currently resides in Texas and now works at a fair-trade coffeeshop called Dominican Joe. The heydays of the game were in 2004 when it had a large community of more than 120,000 players. Utopia was sold to OMAC a company from Ireland in 2008, which later became known as JOLT online gaming and it was rumored that Utopia had been sold for a 5 or 6 figure number. JOLT online gaming in turn is rumored to have been aquired by GameStop.

Strategy & Gameplay

The strategy of Utopia is very deep and intricate for a text based game. Although Utopia has almost no graphics, it is this strategy that continues to draw many players to game. Players are grouped together in a kingdom that can have as much as 25 provinces or rather 25 players. Every player has control over his or her province and can construct various buildings on his or her lands. Players can also train soldiers into defense specialists, offense specialists or elites. Kingdoms can declare war upon eachother when hostile relations exist. Monarchs can also send dragons to other kingdoms. Players can cast spells, attack and perform thievery operations like kidnap peasants, nightstrike or rob other players off runes, gold and food.

Rounds are called ages in the game and an age usually lasts about 3 months. No age is ever the same and the administrators always make minor tweaks to the gameplay. Alliances exist between certain kingdoms in the game, but these alliances are frowned upon by non-alliance members.
