I open this topic in addition to the Ogre's one. Now that it has been asked wether or not grinding is good I wanted to ask actually 2 questions :

    What is grinding for?
    - Making xp
    - find money
    - find stuff
.... (to be updated with your answers)

    What can replace grinding?
    - Trade for money
    - exploration
    - less monsters, longer fights with more strategy (actually could lead to another topic :s )
.... (to be updated with your answers)

Grinding is to make sure you don't complete the game in 1 day. If you did why would you pay to keep playing?

What could replace grinding? The only thing I know is a huge number of quests.

huge number of quests is basically kill 10 (insert things here) or bring 10 (insert items here) and come back. Then there are courier quests. So grinding will probably always be here. The game just has to be immersive. The devs should use users to help make their cinematics and voice casts for quests and stuff to make it more immersive.

Trading can make a game a lot of fun if it is done right. One of the best examples of that for me is the Realm Online. Trading was fun because there were rare items and all the players were on one server.

Skill based gameplay. Splashfighters manages to do it quite nicely.
Or just more gameplay and plot in general, for most RPGs.

What keeps you returning to a skill-based game like Splashfighters, Quinn?

I think the simple answer is, having alternative methods available (alternative drops, daily tasks, alternative crafting methods, etc.) to achieving the same goal. Often times the problem with grinding is boredom since players tend to do the same thing over and over again.
