mmorpgs are massive with lots of people.
MMORPG is a massively multiplayer role playing game and a RPG is a single player or limited multiplayer role playing game. MMORPG is just a sub genre of RPG so yes technically they are the same... however most MMORPG are really really lacking in the RPG department.
MMORPG are Always Multiplayer as RPG games are sometimes multiplayer but in a nutshell they're the same thing

In my experience, MMORPG are more of multiplayer most likely on PC platforms. While RPG are more of console games. However, nowadays console offers MMORPG feature like xbox and playstation does.
