Actually the Paper Mario series is good. I've never tried the N64 version, but I remember the Wii version being quite popular. And recently, there's Paper Mario: The Origami King, but it's received criticism for being more of an adventure game than a role-playing game.

My first rpg was helmet heroes. I started it cause it had very frequent updates and my friend recommended it to me but unfortunately a few months after I started playing, the developer (there was only one) decided to work on a 3-d rpg instead of a 2-d one and abandoned the game. The game slowly started to die and the places became ghost towns so I decided to stop playing too after maxing out 'most everything . That was two years ago and I started searching for something like a 3-d version of it. I couldn't find any so I took a break from RPGs until about half a year ago.

That happens with a lot games, particularly online games. Personally I prefer physical copies of games, because generally they'll last for a very long time as long as they're not damaged, and as long as they don't feature any online component. It's easy to find RPGs, even from the NES era, that can be fun to play. But if I have to play some online RPG, I wouldn't considering spending money unless I had enough optimism for the game and its future.
