The U.S the economy is doing very bad. People are trying not buy very much gas. People are not shoping at expensive stores to buy christmas presents. So will people stop paying for mmorpgs? $10 to $20 a month really adds up. Their are many free mmorpgs that are really awsome and they save money. So I'd like to hear what you guys think about this.

    -Thanks!

Hmm, probably not, it was hassle to get my parents to pay for 2 months of WoW. :/

Great topic:). I think it will have an impact, but we probaly won't see it for a while. Yea, I think free MMORPGs will be helped by this eventually. However, I think it will only be the most popular free MMORPGs that will really benefit.

it depends on how their biz model works. if they can sell a premium for $5 or sell items to those who left the p2ps then they get more income:D.

I've noticed on alexia that most MMOPG's have had declining page counts and hits.

Most of the big ones have had major declines in traffic and page counts, the graphs look similar to that of the worlds stock market, of the list in Wikpedia for browser games only about 4 have maintained their position.

Wikpedia : List of multiplayer browser games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A typical site is like this one : swirve.com - Traffic Details from Alexa

    or this

cybernations.net - Traffic Details from Alexa

declines then steadys a little bit.

rare ones are steady like planetarion

planetarion.com - Traffic Details from Alexa

this one seemed to create a spike then a decline - I guess it was well promoted but did not keep the player base ... be interesting to find out why.

Well i think it will be espeacally on big games like wow since less people will play and then there will be less funding for them to create new and better games.

It could be school started... most kids are in school most of the day and doing sport and whatnot after... in the summer they had all day to play/visit the website.

Good point Addron never took that into mind so maybe this will take effect over that period of time but when the holidays come for those who are at school they probably will come back and spend money.

I dunno about you guys, but the kids at my school that play P2P MMORPGs, mainly either a Runescape membership, (mostly 6th graders) or a WOW membership, (7-8th graders) usually don't play sports. Either they're super-geeks, or they have a balance between sports and MMORPGs.

It may hurt p2ps besides WoW but I doubt WoW addicts will care about $15 a month.

yes the credit squeeze it will have an impact. Not so much on existing P2P games like WoW but getting finance for new start ups will become more difficult. Free to play games are not really free and depend on players buying stuff ingame or advertising to generate income so less cash in players pockets less game income. Most game development is low cost until it gets to publishing and beta stages thats when big bucks are needed to launch the game and its high risk. This will make it much harder to get innovative games published. Games that are not making a profit will have less time to sort out their problems before they are shut down.

I read an article and it says here that the gaming industry is recession resistant.

That is completely false but seeing how video games are entertainment and people need entertainment even more when life is stressful it tends to get that label but it can, will and has fallen some in this recession many companies have closed and quite a few MMO have shut down/are close to shutting down. :(

Lots of smaller companies are selling out to larger corporations to stay alive.
