Game of Thrones is an eagerly-anticipated MMORPG currently being developed by the team of HBO and the creators of Battlestar Galactica Online. It will be set in the same world made popular in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, and will tie in with the second season of the TV show.

Comment: You can't exactly write a review about Game of Thrones without mentioning the TV-series with the same name. The HBO-success are requires that you mention the novels by George R.R. Martin. All this makes you realize that preunderstanding is important to enjoy Cyanide Studios game. I can say that I really liked the TV-series but I can't really say the same about the game.

Basically, this is an action RPG gameplay with influences from Bioware titles, with a exaggerative portion of story in the game. The story revolves around the Night's Watch veteran Mors Westford and the priest Alester Sarwyck, and at first it's Mors we get to know. Both of them are drawn into a mystery, but it's a story that is told from two perspectives in turns. A clever solution, but unforunately the story is terribly touch and too focused on dialogues.

These huge chunks of talking makes you rapidly press the skip button until something breaks. Sure, you get to interact and influence the talk by selecting different options, but that doesn't make the stilted, woody and pretentious script any better. The parts when you actually play the game just feels like an excuse to start another boring dialogue, and it doesn't get better that the voices can barely be called acceptable.

When you finally come to the battle, the swords and blood initially looks very promising with its many different attacks and defenses. You can slow down the time to hand out orders to yourself and your companions. There are plenty of attacks and as you rises in level you get even more attacks to choose between. The only problem is that whatever you do, the result is always the same. You win. I can just repeat the same attack over and over again to get a victory which kills all the motivation to try something new. In combination with basically the same enemies throughtout the game, the game won't be fun for a long time.

It is also thought that the players are offered the possibility to take control of a dog and adventure with it. A fun idea, but once again there's problems. To sneak around as a dog is boring and to attack is just like a meaningless button-squashing game.

In addition the side quests, exploration and other things that make RPG exciting, is just bad. The vignette music from the television series are here and the actors James Cosmo and Conleth Hill show up, but the true Game of Thrones-atmosphere never show up. The outdated graphics is a reason for this: the whole game is pretty far from today's graphics elites. The surroundings are dull and when you hit an enemy, the attack goes right through instead of on the enemy. And the design of Mors dog is... just a pure joke.

It is difficult to find any real reason to play Game of Thrones. A game is not a movie or a novel. It's a shame that it turned out like this since the conditions for a really good role playing game, already exists.
