Pirate 101 is a free-to-play pirate-themed MMOG currently in development by KingsIsle Entertainment, makers of Wizard 101. Pirate 101 is set in the same universe as Wizard 101, so players will continue to challenge the Clockwork Empire. Play starts with players rolling up a pirate, then setting out to gain a ship and crew. Players will be able to find swashbuckling combat on the ground, but the main fighting focus will be ship-to-ship combat high in the sky among the skyways and floating islands in the Weave.

Comment: Pirates 101 has the same sort of charm as Wizard 101, although it uses a totally different combat system from the latter game—instead of the strategy of choosing a deck and a wizarding school, players are given a much more standard MMO set of DPS, tanks, support, etc. except with a turn-based combat system. The addition of essentially real-time turn based ship combat adds the necessary pirate element. The game still falls down hard for all audiences, however, because it’s geared heavily towards young audiences (very young) and therefore uses a lot of safety features that stifle and interrupt social gaming.”
