Targeting everyone isn’t always practical, because you’re always going to have different types of gamers, so it’s really a choice between making games that you’re passionate about or making games that seem to appeal a good number of people. For instance, don’t expect to create the next Fortnite, Minecraft, or some other big title that caters to a massive amount of people, because dreaming too big will just delay development; keep your idea to a reasonable scope and create a planner with incremental steps of things to add to your game (e.g. use a Gantt chart to illustrate your development process).

    But one important thing, probably the most important thing, is to find people to work with, because it’s a lot harder to make games (especially good games) by yourself, especially if you’re only skilled in one particular aspect of game development; plus when you communicate with people other than yourself, you actually get good advice. Even if you’re a solo game developer that can program, create music, model and make art, it’s still good to get advice. For instance, indie game developer Thomas Brush streams his game development on YouTube and occasionally gets good advice from users in his stream chat.

    And when it comes to getting started with publishing a game, there are a few ways you can approach it. One of the most common entries, especially in the previous decade, was to create a game in Adobe Flash and upload it to some game sharing site (ArmorGames, Newgrounds, etc.), but that’s not practical anymore since Flash is long gone.
