What's your opinion on foldable phones?

Discussion in 'Ogres Breakfast' started by Snowy, May 16, 2021.

  1. Foldable phones are some of the newest technologies to come out in recent years, with foldable phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Huawei Mate Xs. What do you think about foldable phones? Do you think they're the next generation of smartphones? Do you think it'll change mobile gaming in any way? Do you already have a foldable phone or do you ever plan on getting one?

    ---

Personally, I'm a huge fan of foldable phones, because they're just so compact. Like I've always preferred smaller phones, because they're much easier to carry than phablets, but these kind of phones are great, because not only are they compact, but you get more screen space. I think for now, they're really just a fad, but if a major company like Apple steps in with a foldable phone, this could very well define the next generation of phones.

As for gaming, I'm not exactly sure if anything new will come out of mobile gaming (though I can see some potential ideas, but it would really depend on obsolescence of non-foldable phones to actually grow in popularity), but I do think foldable phones will offer a better user experience, especially with the availability of a bigger screen. Like imagine being able to play a game with just one hand (you can't really do that with a phablet), but then playing a different game with a bigger screen (and a bigger UI interface) by unfolding the phone.

I think folding phones is a joke get insurance because they ain’t sturdy, I won’t ever get one because I won’t leave Apple as don’t like any other phones as had em all growing up even had a Nokia flip phone an it’s just a gimmick I can see a lot of faults with these new foldable phones. Maybe if I saw n used one in the flesh but from what I see n hear,

just looks like a game boy in phone form.

  3. I think assuming a new piece of "technological innovation" being some joke tends to be a recurring mistake, because what you thought might be a commercial failure could very well be the standard of the future.

You've mentioned Apple being a product you won't leave, but even Apple gets laughed at for some things. For instance, Apple's "think different" innovations tend to create initial disappointment, but then later create widespread acceptance or the new standard. Things like the headphone jack removal (now non-Apple smartphones are following Apple's footsteps), the introduction of the iPad (people just called it an upscaled iPod/iPhone yet it sold 1 million twice as fast as the iPhone did), the commercialized computer mouse and GUI desktop (which was initially introduced by Xerox but made it to the Apple Lisa and was later popularized by Apple for future computer products), the removal of the floppy disk (with the iMac), the decision to not add Adobe Flash support for their devices, etc. And what happens, if Apple itself adopts the standard? Would you just ditch Apple when your current device becomes obsolete?

Like I can see where foldable phones can get criticized, but not for the innovation itself. I think presentation of the product is the main key to success. When the first foldable phones were preparing to hit the shelves, many product reviewers thought the phone was covered in a removable plastic screen protector (here's one for the Galaxy Fold), but trying to remove that cover would actually break the device.

And I don't necessarily see foldable phones as a Game Boy in phone form, but hey, the Game Boy was successful as well, so that's probably a good thing. I mean, I can see how you could maybe have a game displayed on one side of the screen and controls on the other side, but I think games could be even more innovative than just that. But I think there's a lot more you could do with a foldable phone, like multitasking (for instance, using one app on one side of the screen, and another app on the other side).

True Apple isn’t the greatest but it suites me i guess an everyone have there personal preference as well but my mrs works in a phone shop called 3 Three Network an she hasn’t sold one of them nor has anyone else they had to send em back cause like you said I think a lot of people criticise it I guess it cause it’s all new an maybe they think it might stand more chance breaking.

I do like the idea though just isn’t me.
