80 Days by Inkle Studios is the modern version of the classic choose your own adventure books. It reads like a novel, offers many different paths and has a few video game elements to keep it fresh. The art style is well done, the game interface is polished and the whole thing works pretty well.

The game is about traveling the world in 80 days, it's a constant balance of time and money. You discover different routes through conversations and choices but getting these can take up precious days that could be spent travelling.. maybe you'll learn of a faster route, maybe you wont! Of course now that you know the route you have to be able to afford it! That one day trip looks mighty tempting but will it's $1000 fare leave you enough for future routes? Maybe you should take the slower but cheaper path this time.

Money is obtained by borrowing or more commonly through a sort of market system. The more you converse the more likely you are to get tips on what is hot is distance cities, then you can buy low and sell high if you go that way.

Overall the story is very well written and the game plays out really well. I've played through it twice and it didn't lose it's charm on either.. I feel I could get at least another run or two out of it before starting to run into a lot of repeat stuff. This is definitely NOT a game for people who don't like to read, it's paced well and broken up nicely but the game is still centered around reading so don't bother if you don't wanna read.

Game is $5 on Google Play, iOS and Amazon App Store

  5. Definitely worth the $6 on iOS/Android, even nearly 8 years later. And the game costs $13 on the Switch, but I think the Switch version definitely offers a better experience.
