Trendy Entertainment broke the silence it kept for the past few months today with it's announcement of Dungeon Defenders II.

The first game focused on cooperation and grind but the new one will be quite different, yet it still feels like the DD we know and love. The game will be split into 2 seperate releases: one focused on the competitive MOBA mode and the other focused on the cooperative TD. The MOBA mode (which will come first) is advertised as "more rpg-esque, with more hero customization, persistent hero leveling, loot and a town square where players can socialize", so basically the town is going to act as a lobby for the players to buy stuff and level up, group and queue for games.
This time arround Trendy aren't fooling arround with the hero count which has sky rocketed up to 24, each with their own towers and abilities; also your heroes are persistent between the 2 modes - anything you acquire will be available in both, which is a godsend considering the ammount of grind that will probably be required in the game.

While the original was supposed to have cross-platform play, it kinda dissolved with time and everyone forgot about it. This time arround it's all in at launch with alot of social features like friend list, chat and others. The boner comes with the fact that it will not launch for PSN or Xbox Live mostly because they don't allow Trendy to pour constant updates to the game.

With the market constantly shifint towards free to play it was no wonder that Trendy would try to emulate the success of games like League of Legends, but this decision also means that the already well established series is going to have an even bigger audience to support it, which is the most important part for a multiplayer focused game. Trendy has said that at the moment there is only 1 curency which you can both buy with money and obtain by playing. From the store you will be able to buy anything without spending money and furthermore stat giving items are only obtainable by playing the game.

DD II's competetive beta is currently running - you can sign up here, with the cooperative beta starting late 2013 or early 2014. The game will be coming out for PC, Mac, iOS and Web.
