Have you ever gone dumpster diving?

Discussion in 'Ogres Breakfast' started by Snowy, May 9, 2021.

  1. The saying goes, "one man's trash is another man's treasure". Have you ever gone dumpster diving, and what interesting things have you found?

    ---

Like I've seen a thrown-away laptop (and you can always tear them apart and make use of parts that might be handy like the RAM chip or even the external hard drive for storage). And another thing I've seen is a thrown-away table (the kind of table that's good for placing a single item like a flower pot or a mug of coffee) that's in pretty new condition (I think the only reason why it was thrown away was because it has terrible center of mass). Obviously, I wouldn't recommend dumpster diving everyday, but there are some things you might find interesting or useful from dumpster diving every once in a while.

When I lived in London my flat mate used to do this but for food as it was a big place called Sainsburys I went once or twice with him an tbh it was kinda a adrenaline rush cause you can’t get caught it is actually illegal here but we got shit load of food all sealed an everything which is why I think that the government now are giving the food to the homeless as it’s all still in date an just gonna go to landfill when people can safely eat it I mean we found five pizzas all safely packed still an shed load of other stuff he had filled his chest freezer lemme put it that way an you can find all sorts, sadly ive only been to a food one nothing else.

This was 20yrs ago so a lot had changed since then.

  3. Not surprising at all. It's quite a shame that a lot of grocery stores throw away unsold food instead of just donating them, even here in the United States. Like the food is still edible for anyone to eat; it might have some blemishes or unfavorable appearance, but still taste as good. Food waste is such a problem, even for the environment (like having to use up all of the energy to grow crops and take care of livestock, and being wasteful afterwards). There's a lot of misconception about people dumpster diving for food, where people think that dumpster divers just find half-eaten food or unsanitary food, when really it's mostly fresh produce.

And there probably ought to be some legislation about throwing food away in more places, like similar to France's law prohibiting grocery stores from throwing away edible food or else they can be fined about $4,000 each time a store's caught throwing away food that could otherwise be donated.
