Heroes Of Newerth

Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is an Action RPG developed and published by S2 Games. This game was created based on the famous Warcraft III mod; Defense of the Ancients (DotA). The fact that HoN is very well known as DotA 3D stirred up arguments among players regarding the credibility of HoN. There were statements saying that HoN is a cheap copy of DotA. Actually it is not, S2 Games requested permission from DotA's current developer, IceFrog to produce the game with regards to DotA, and IceFrog granted that access.

HoN was officially released on 12 May 2010, and it is P2P in most countries, while it is F2P in some Asian countries suchs as Malaysia and Singapore. A one-time fee of USD30 is required to purchase a HoN account.

HoN is played from a birds-eye view, similar to many RTS games, but in HoN, players only control one character. Up to ten players will battle each other out in a 5v5 match between two sides; The Legion and the Hellbourne.with only one goal on their mind, to destroy the opponents Ancients, located in the heart of their respective base.

Before a match starts, players will choose their respective heroes in a hero-selection screen. Each hero is unique from each other and have their own strengths and weaknesses. Mainly, there are 3 types of heroes; Strength Heroes, Agility Heroes and Intelligence Heroes, either melee or ranged. There are about 60+ heroes to choose from and the numbers will increase through time, because the developers are still adding new heroes into the game. From these 3 types of heroes, there are several roles which a hero can play. The role of a hero greatly depends on three main factors; Stats build, Skills synergy and most importantly, Item build. Some examples of roles are as below:

Initiator - these types of heroes usually are the first to jump into a team-clashes. Their skills are either normally made to deal large damage in a short duration, or made to absorb some damage while the other teammates get into position. Initiators are important as they play a large factor in the outcome of a battle. Inexperienced initiators will tend to accidentally expose their ambush site and alerts the opposing team about the danger of an ambush.

Carry - one of the most IMPORTANT role that every team must have. A team without a carry will most likely, but not exactly, lose. Carries are heroes which can naturally deal constantly high amount of damage throughout a battle and ensures that he kills of the opponents before they have a chance to kill an ally. (Kill-you-before-you-kill-me) Being a carry is not easy, one must have a steady/high gold income in order to farm out the required items. Carries normally start out weak, but at late stages of the game, they are very deadly and unstoppable.

Support - It is good to have a support in a team to ensure that allies can be healed/protected during lane pushing. The presence of a support may turn the tables in a battle because they have the ability to handicap their opponents and at the same time giving boosts and buffs to allies. Supports usually do not require much farming because their specialty lies in their skills.

Tank - It's difficult to understand the concept between tank, carry and initiator. Tanks are normally, but not limited to, Strength heroes due to their high HP pool and sometimes their armor. However, not all tanks are able to initiate as some do not possess AoE (area of effect) skills. Tanks may not be Carries too because Carries have to be fast, deadly and fed. The main role of Tanks are to jump in the battle and try to direct all enemy attacks towards themselves in order to protect their allies. Due to this, heroes that possesses a Tanking role may have a secondary role to play.

Roamers - Roamers are irritating hit-and-run-ers. Roamers constantly switch lanes during the beginning of the match to disturb or prevent heroes in other lanes from farming. They usually gank unexpectingly from the forests and trap the enemy in between, ensuring death. Roamers tend to get weak in later stages.

Disabler - usually Intel Heroes, because many of them possess abilities to stun, slow, DPS, banish or hex the opponent. Their main duty is to keep the enemy Carry disabled. Their skills usually have AoE and can deal damage to multiple enemies at an instant. Intel heroes have generally low HP pool which makes them easy to be countered.

There are many sub-roles as well, and the roles of heroes may change accordingly to the situation. No hero has a fixed role.

Once all players have chosen their hero, the game begins with all heroes at Level 1. Players will be allocated with a set amount of gold in which they can use it to purchase items in the shop. The main shops are located in the base itself, but there are 2 outposts and 2 secret shops located outside the base. Secret shops provide more expensive and exotic items which most are required for higher tiered items. After purchasing items, players diverge allocate them selves between 3 lanes; top, middle, or bottom.

As soon as the timer reaches 0, a wave of creeps (NPC mobs) will spawn at each lane and will start advancing towards the enemy base. Players will gain experience and gold through killing creeps, enemy heroes, enemy towers or neutral mobs. As players level up, they will gain one skill point per level. Players can use these skill points to upgrade 1 out of 4 skills, or upgrade their stats. Every hero has a special skill (4th skill) which can only be upgraded once the hero reaches a certain level. These skills are commonly known as Ultimates.

There are a few types of skills, namely Active, Passive and Channeling. Active skills are click and point skills with set cooldowns. Passive skills are automatically implicated once upgraded and Channeling skills are skill that, when casted, the player must not move their hero, failing which, the spell will be cancelled. There are also skills that can be activated/disactivated. These skills normally modifies the normal attack of the hero, giving it poison damage, cleaving attack and so on.

HoN has a very steep learning curve and it may be hard for beginners to cope with the speed of the game. There's much more to learn about the game. The features above only briefly states the outline of the game. Farming techniques, item builds, skill builds, lane control, hero combos, all these can only be learnt through playing.

HoN is a very challenging game which at the same time provides players with hours of action-filled matches. Visit here to learn more about Heroes Of Newerth
