Out of game activities - yes or no?

Some games try to allow players to do things outside the game itself but effect your status in the game. For example, Heromart for AQ3D, or faceback contents.

Are you one for this, or do you feel that games should be self-contained. And thus, everything outside the game can only be a reflect/comment on the game.
