What are your thoughts on carbon nanotubes?

Discussion in 'Ogres Breakfast' started by Snowy, May 10, 2021.

  1. You might be familiar with graphite, from the pencil you write with, but there's a material called graphene (which is a byproduct of graphite), and with the right arrangement and structure can be extremely durable and applicable.

For instance, carbon nanotubes are known for having excellent electrical conductivity, tensile strength, and thermal conductivity, but mass-production of carbon nanotubes is the biggest challenge. What are you thoughts on carbon nanotubes and what kind of things are you hopeful for with this innovation (examples: space elevators, tech, etc.)?

    ----

I think if anyone can figure out how to mass produce this sort of material, they could win the next Nobel Peace Prize and maybe event create a whole new subfield of material science. The biggest thing I envision with this sort of technology is a way to replace silicon (or maybe not necessarily replace, but to create alternatives since there will eventually be a silicon shortage).

But probably the thing I want to see most is better technology out of carbon nanotubes (smaller and more powerful semiconductor chips, more efficient computers (for general computing, gaming, mobile, etc.), and so on). I think it's impressive to see how long Moore's Law has stood, and I think carbon nanotubes could potentially be the future of semiconductors, but that it's only a matter of time. But who knows, maybe it'll just be a dream.
