What do you think about the iPod Touch going forward?

Discussion in 'Ogres Breakfast' started by Snowy, May 15, 2021.

  1. Maybe you remember this device, like from playing classic games like Temple Run or Jetpack Joyride. In terms of gaming, where do you see the iPod Touch? This device has been around since 2007 and the latest generation was the 7th generation iPod Touch released in May of 2019 (so it's been about 2 years since the latest product release).

I find it surprising that the iPod Touch is still around. The 6th generation iPod Touch was released in 2015, and you would think maybe after 4 years, there wouldn't even be another generation. I have the feeling that Apple will keep this product around for longer, just because they might want to cater to a certain target audience, even if that audience makes up a small minority of people.

For instance, I think kids would be the main target audience. Like if you think about it, parents aren't going to buy 6 year-olds a phone since it requires a lot of responsibility on the child's part (plus an iPhone costs more, so losing a phone is pretty bad). And the iPad probably won't replace the iPod Touch, because it's much easier for a kid to carry an iPod Touch than an iPad. I think it would be a pretty good "gaming device" for kids in general.

I am amazed that they have not released one for so long but you’re right they would suit kids better then ipad because if there small hands I mean even my iPhone 12 is too big for my letter one so this could be some Apple might surprise us with.

  3. My guess as to why Apple hasn't released a new iPod Touch yet is because they're only going to release new ones during major updates and hardware revisions. Like for instance, iOS 12 was the 6th generation's last iOS version. And for the 7th generation, that one is on iOS 14 which is up-to-date already.

Like even if it has been 2 years since a new iPod Touch has been released, it would really only make sense to release a new one if there were new hardware or updates. It wouldn't make any sense to have an 8th generation iPod running iOS 14 competing against a 7th generation iPod that is also running iOS 14.
