What makes World of warcraft so special?

I dont really think anything does besides just being famous.. World of Warcraft does ALOT of advertising and sell outs with celebrities. I havent ever seen any other game company hire celebrities like WoW does to sell their game. Yes its effective thats why all these companies hire celebrities and make commercials.

You can see WoW commercials on just about every TV channel. Other games if they even have commercials are usually limited to like Syfy channel and G4.

This kind of advertising makes WoW a household name. So when anyone thinks of computer games natually they tend to think of WoW first and thats what they try.

I mean Lindsey Lohan is famous too and a household name, she probably gets way more hits on the net than she ever deserves. That doesnt make her cool or something good lol. It just means shes plastered all over the TV so people know about her.

 

Compared to Starwars the Old Republic and Lord of the Rings Online, WoW is terrible! Starwars the Old Republic will smash WoW this year!

 

WoW was the first MMORPG to get most everything right. You did not have to look all over the world to find something blindly. WoW made it easy. Hyping it with the tv ads didn't hurt either.

 

Its not so much that everyone else plays it. Its just because its what is pushed into everyone's heads to think of when it comes to playing online games.

Even people who have never played an online game if you ask them to name one, chances are they will say WoW. Not because its a "great" game, just because that's what is in the mainstream media. Commercials, advertising, celebrity promotions etc. Even my own mother, who types with 1 finger in all caps, and Im surprised sometimes she even knows what the internet is, knows about WoW. Why? Cause she seen the commercial lol. In fact she asked me about it cause she thought it was a movie, when she saw the commercial.....

With all the to-do about it, most people try it at least once. Some probably do actually like it. Some may play it just because it is what everyone else is "playing" Some may not know there are way more games out there to try.

Personally I just think all the "hype" is what gives it its playerbase, not that its a good game. If other games spent as much on marketing, commercials, celebrity promotions, and even word of mouth etc just like WoW does, then a lot of them would have just as big of player bases as WoW too if not bigger.

 

Most action packed pvp ever though it does usually require decent gear.
dungeons and raids are amazing
Unfortunatly WoW is starting to slide downhill with cata being so disaapointing for the 85s because its the .same old endgame as wotlk... blizz can turn it around if they put some effort into it, but with project titan coming out we will see

last I knew you had to buy all of the expansions as well.

 

WoW was fun. you really need to play WoW back then to really understand why they made so many WoW addicts

 

It was the first of its kind and set the marker for future games. Everyone follows the WoW structure now.

 

i would try the trial adrian... taste the bg's and dungeons then see if u like it
