What MMORPG's free or otherwise not yet released are you most looking forward too? Try to do it off the top of your head, without looking at a list of upcoming games. :)

I'm gonna go with The Elder Scrolls Online and EverQuest Next Landmark.

Absolutely love the The Elder Scrolls series, it's amazing what they've done and in my opinion they are a clear leader in the RPG space, no one else does what they do. I've always wanted to see that experience transferred over into the multiplayer space... honestly I didn't quite want MMO and more just multiplayer but we get what we get.

I'm very interested to see if they can bring the full Elder Scrolls experience over to a MMO without watering it down... I'm very sceptical at this point but I'm liking what I've heard so far. I can't wait to see more.

Landmark on the other hand was just announced a few days ago... I'm really not a big fan of EverQuest but I really like what they are doing with this game. I'm a big fan of Minecraft and they are trying to bring that experience into the MMO space. They seem to be trying to do something new and that is very exciting to me as MMOs mostly have seemed to follow the same road lately... it's just getting stale. I hoping they can deliver on their big goals.

Everquest Next will be interesting due to the history behind the first one:). Everquest was what got the ball rolling for MMOs until WoW knocked it out of the park lol.

World of Warships will be another one to watch:). I think it will be interesting due to not only the World of Tanks community here, but the battleships themselves. I actually have a relaive that was on a battleship during World War II so that should bge very interesting to play. Of course the relative is too old now to care about the game or any games, but it will be fun to see how WarGaming treats Battleships in the game.

Yeah I think they have a chip on their shoulders, EverQuest really kicked off the MMO genre but WoW ended up stealing most of the glory, I think with EverQuest Next they are trying to start a new era rather than create the next WoW which could work out very well for them.

I think World of Warships could be pretty big as well, Wargaming already has the base down with Tanks and Warplanes so it's just a matter of adjusting for ships. It really hasn't been done in a multiplayer format that much, it could do well. I'm defiantly gonna try it out.

World of Warships, Elder Scrolls online (though correct me if I'm wrong, there's not going to be a PC version? I'm not sure if I imagined that or is that real), and Star Citizen. Actually, Star Citizen is currently ranked at the top of upcoming games for me.

Ooo Star Citizen! I forgot about that one. It looks amazing, I played I think Starlancer back in the day... always amazed by it back then. These types of games seemed to basically die off (at least in quality), which is a shame because they are so cool. Who doesn't want pilot a space ship?!?

It looks like they've announced The Elder Scrolls Online is coming to PC, Mac, Xbox One and Ps4. Elder Scrolls has always been a big PC game, I think people would riot and burn down Bethesda if they announced no PC version.

Right now I'm tracking a small few:

    Elder Scrolls Online
    Wildstar
    Star Citizen
    EverQuest Next

I think I might gaze at EverQuest Landmark -- but I'm not as good at the creative aspect (nor do I have the time) so I'll probably just enjoy whatever falls out of it.

I would like to say Otherland--but from what I hear it's probably cancelled because the developer went kaput.

Wildstar, forgot about that one too. It's kinda dropped off for me in the last couple months... not sure why. If nothing else though I think they've shown how MMO development should be handled. They've been extremely chatty throughout the development, keeping players in the loop with how it's all going and answering player questions.

Unfortunately, many people, that's precisely why the genre was dying off, up until now. Star Citizen really looks extremely promising, in fact, kinda scary if they deliver all they claim, I really don't need another addicting game in my life xD
and btw, before I started playing WoT, I was playing Freelancer Discovery mod online, and it was quite great :) I'm not sure if those servers are still running, but if they do, they're definitely worth a play for anyone that wants to fly a spaceship till Star Citizen arrives :)

I'm seriously considering breaking out my Starlancer copy if I can find it... and get it to work D: Have they said anything about release time frame on Star Citizen yet?

Or just try out freelancer, I'm sure after all this time, it costs next to nothing, or less :) .
Freelancer is pretty much the sequel of starlancer, and same people that made those games are the ones that work on Star Citizen now :)

As for its release, as far as I gathered, alpha should start near the end of 2013 (there's still 40.000 slots available for those that want to join), while the full game should be ready by the end of 2014

Only could find it on Ebay and Amazon, most seemed around $20. I wanna play it but not at that price.

Ok I will look for it then. :)

20$ for a game over 10 years old, that's actually no longer supported by Microsoft and whose online servers have been shut down since? Wow that's a real rip off.
I was able to find Battlefield 2 for 10$ just 3-4 years after its release, I thought freelancer would be about 5$ now

oh and, take a look at this beauty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvIuzXmkTDY

Everquest Next will be F2P and it's very possible The Elder Scrolls Online could do the same. I'm expecting a Buy-to-Play model like Guild Wars 2 (given ESO is coming to console makes this even more likely) but nothing has been announced yet. That would make it very easy to get both :D

I expect that most of the next-gen games coming from Triple A studios will be buy-to-play. In a manner of speaking, anything that has a more extensive world building and server structure than something like DCUO (say a highly sandboxy MMO) will need an up front consumer commitment to give the publisher the money they need to make it function.

GW2 has shown that buy-to-play with freemium is the best hybrid free-to-play model for a huge world with demanding servers. And GW2 also incorporates the freemium currency as tradable in game for in game gold. So I expect that any upcoming MMO studio worth its salt will use this. I just hope that the box price is set something like $30 or $40 and not at $60 even initially.

The argument is that while that influx is good, it's more important to have a much higher starting population.

So the alternative is that the game will be entirely free-to-play; but have a freemium "subscription" or "gold user account" that consists of a box price. The gold accounts will come with some sort of perks such as quicker login queue, allowance, special areas, or even discounts at the virtual item shops.

Freelancer was a great game! I remember really enjoying playing that. Too bad it hasn't been picked up by Steam or Good Old Games yet. Probably a licensing issue going on.

Other space sims to prepare for Star Citizen should include:

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos -- well, look at that $6 at GOG.
Tachyon: The Fringe - $30 on Steam? Really?

For anyone interested in Wildstar developments and current hype, I've got a blog post about that from earlier last month:

    Agreed

I think especially in ESO's case it makes a lot of sense to go the Guild Wars 2 route. Elder Scrolls games have been released at set price with a few paid expansions for years, the market is already use to it and should help them really sell the game. Sub fee would be a very bad move for them... I'm sure they'd just love to do it but in the long run it makes a lot more sense to avoid the change to F2P nonsense and just go out at $60, market it as unlimited play, biggest TES ever, work in a little cash shop action and plan for future paid big expansions.

On the console side it avoids all the issues of getting monthly fees or a complicated cash shop working on Xbox One and Ps4... makes console gamers a lot more interested since you just buy the game like any other... plus on Xbox you'd have to pay for Gold as well so no monthly fee would make it a little easier to sell. With big online games like Destiny coming, it's almost gonna be expected ... if it's not f2p within a few month the census with just be "I wish it was" or "why isn't it... these other big games are".

I just really hope it happens lol, a sub fee would be my second choice I guess... I just really hope they don't destroy this game with a horrible cash shop model.

I'm thinking the same, sucks it's not on Steam or GOG. It's pricey because no one can offer it digitally and buying the box version of a 10 year old game is usually still pricey for it's age. :(

hmm I'll check them out, thanks.

Yeah that is a good article :)

buy to play is not bad if the game is good enough. pay to play is outdated for new games imo.
