Neverwinter Nights 2 (NWN2) is a computer role-playing game set in the fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms, one of the popular campaign settings of Dungeons and Dragons. Comment: neverwinter 2 carries with itself improved graphics and story compared to the previous one, but God i hate this game...several times i tried to play through it and just could never gather enough patience for the horrible AI of your party members, bad programing, constant loading screens, and pointless quests that drag out endlessly...



story - its not bad at all, it has a lot of potential although i dislike stories in which you start off as a farmer and become one of the most powerful individuals in the world. the story has nice twists and turns, but oh God is it dragged out. all the shine it has starts to fade out due to constant pointless generic quests set into the story purely to expand the game, at one point i even forgot some interesting quests i ran across...
its expansion mask of the betrayer had a very good story line, quite original. but despite my desire to play through it i was just not able to due to horrendously horribly horrid game mechanic they added to that expansion (will get to it later).
the third installment storm of zehyr just couldnt keep my attention for more than two hours because of those two hours i actually played it for 45min probably, the other 75min i was watching the loading screen...quite exiting...i must add...

gameplay - the gameplay is essentially the same as in neverwinter nights 1. it is based on improved d&d 3.5 edition, offers a lot of choices on character creation, and this time includes a party of several characters...and now id like to mention these characters, the supporting cast. the characters you meet that decide to tag along are first of all, mostly bland and plain annoying with little personality (except for a few). you meet a dwarf that like to fight, an annoying gnome that doesnt even have a reason to be in the game in the first place, a paladin who's dominant personality is that he is a paladin, a spoiled brat that happens to be a sorcerer, etc. but you can ignore their half-baked personalities, what you cant ignore is their retarded AI. i see what the game was going for, i really do, it wanted to provide the player with control similar to the one seen in knight of the old republic but failed at it miserably. you are given control over the character you select, but at the same time, you have little to no control at all over the remaining characters and they will either:
1) attempt to be useful (what you can hope for)
2) get themselves killed by doing something stupid (like casting spells while surrounded by enemies)
3) just plain piss you off by doing something so stupid you could never see it coming (using up your single-use items you have been saving, using their high-level spells/abilities on random low level monsters (meteor storm on rabid dogs!) and otherwise just piss you off)
i thought i could (like in baldur's gate or knights of the old republic) pause the game and give out orders to my party, but guess what, the game told me to fuck myself every time i tried to do that. you see, after you give orders to one character, the moment you switch to the next one to give him orders, the previous character's orders are instantly deleted and he proceeds to do whatever the fuck he wants cuz you're not the boss of him i guess...
mask of the betrayer offers richer supporting cast which i really liked. it reminded me of planescape:torment and its bunch of weird characters. they introduced a new influence system that allows you to see how's your relationship with your followers which in turn can change their behavior and unlock potential interesting side quests, its a really nice touch i must say. but its gets downhill from there REALLY fast. you see, the mask of the betrayer revolves around some curse that has been put onto you, and this curse demands that you consume souls and spirits of the world and the land in order to sustain it or it will destroy you. sounds like a cool thing...if we ignore the fact that its done so poorly that it basically didnt let me play the game, and i am not kidding, i tried and tried over and over to no avail. explanation time: you get this huge-ass side bar that takes half of the screen that monitors your hunger. the hunger meter gradually decreases and when it reaches 0 - puff, you're dead. you are given a choice to resist the hunger (once per day) or consume a spirit, both options replenish the bar. now here comes the horrible part, the hunger bar keeps dropping no matter what you do and i mean NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO. im browsing the shop - i die cuz i didnt notice how hungry i am; im talking to a plot relevant character - i die cuz fuck you; im fighting monsters - i die cuz i just got too damn hungry from that fighting. the bar is dropping so damn fast its impossible to play. i go to the world map and decide i want to leave the city and explore the mountains, i get there - i die cuz i forgot to eat a fucking soul on my way there. the game kills me if i decide to leave my current location with less than 100% full hunger bar! ite ridiculous! if i have 100% full hunger i will arrive at my destination with 5% hunger which gives me about 1min to find something to consume or i die. id also like to mention now that there are areas in which when you arrive, you are met by an NPC that starts a lengthy conversation with you that will abruptly end with your death...no matter how much i tried to play it, i just couldnt, the game wouldnt allow me...
storm of zehyr is basically loading screen after loading screen with a little game in between. let me try to describe my experience of playing it: game starts (loading screen) fight some goblins and leave area (loading screen) move 5 pixels on world map get attacked by goblins (loading screen) kill goblins (loading screen) get ambushed by more goblins (loading screen) kill goblins (loading screen) get to nearby city (loading screen) enter shop (loading screen) leave shop (loading screen) enter nearby house (loading screen) that was a mistake, leave house (loading screen). and i should tell you, even thou my computer is rather good and can handle basically all games i every played on it with ease on max graphics, the loading screens were AT LEAST 1-2min every time. it got very annoying very fast so i quit.

environment / graphics - environment is nicely done, cities feel alive, wilderness feels wild, and crypts and caves feel damp and creepy. graphics are FINE i guess but i have some issues with them. firstly, spells/magic is too damn flashy and not recognizable. baldur's gate you could always tell apart one spell from the other, here every spell looks like a mess of flashy lights and random colors, its distracting at best. and second, characters usually look like they are dead drunk or drugged (your choice) when they talk, it can be either funny or annoying, your choice. and somehow, fighting animations seem not so convincing here, sure, i can see my character hitting his enemy with a sword, but i just dont feel like he's doing it, eh, dunno how to describe it.

sound - now this is where they got lazy. remember the cool soundsets you could chose for your character in neverwinter nights 1? well, they just copy-pasted them here cuz they didnt feel like doing more original voices for the game. i just cant remember any soundtrack from this game, none really stuck. its just uninspired...



overall, i dislike this game because of its really bad gameplay, the game just wouldnt let me play it no matter how much i tried...the blandness of the characters makes not care for them or what they do or say. the pointlessness of half the quests in the game makes me not care for them either nor where they lead to. and thus i end up not caring enough for the game to play it through. really a step backwards from neverwinter nights 1 in all directions except the storyline (and that's a big maybe)...

Comment: What strikes me first when I start playing is unfortunately how incredibly bad the camera works. It doesn't move properly, and it is very clumsy to control on your own, despite the settings available to change on the selection menu. Fortunately, after you played it a while you suceed to get a pretty good control over it. Unlike the first game, the story is very well written in Neverwinter Nights 2. The events in the first game are mentioned but never feels present. So it doesn't really matter if you haven't played the first game. The more or less serious technical difficulties are failing to obscure the amazing story and experience Neverwinter Nights 2 offers, despite a slow start and a few gaps in performance. So even though I was a bit dissapointed in the beginning you forget all about it once you have gotten in to the game.

Comment: Good game it has made some improvements from the original one the graphics are better the story line is more intriguing.
But I do prefer the original one simply because of the game play. The camera controls on nwn2 seem a little weird to be honest and took a little bit of getting used to ( probably because ramped all the graphics options to full which might of made slightly slower) Still an amazing game but I do prefer the original one.
