A lot of gamers are excited about the future of Marvel’s superheroes in video games.
This is thanks to the announcement of a planned slate of epic games led by a
Spider-Man title that we’ll be seeing in the near future. This is an interesting
development given Marvel’s somewhat lackluster work in the mainstream console market
for the past several years. But before entering this new era of allegedly epic
games, let’s take a quick look back at some of the standout titles the game market has
seen since Marvel’s rise to the top of the entertainment industry.

Marvel: Contest Of Champions

There are a lot of mobile games that could be mentioned in this piece, but this is
probably the most significant of the bunch. Marvel: Contest of Champions is one of
many major franchise adaptations that has been successful. The classic fighting game lets players collect heroes and villains from the Marvel universe and take them through all kinds of quests and versus  options. It’s not a perfect game as there is a high incentive to pay, which annoys a lot of mobile gamers.  There is also too much focus on progression and not enough on achieving tangible goals. It’s still a well made game and it’s a great way to enjoy a wide range of characters.

The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

Given his popularity, the Hulk has had a fairly limited history in gaming. In these types of games, characters and settings from movies, comics, and more make up the backgrounds and icons for some extra fun in traditional video games. Still, the best example of the Hulk in video games was in 2005’s The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. The game was praised for its quality story mode and its high-octane action and remains the best game to include everyone’s favorite unstoppable green giant. The green wonder can also be found as a fun slot.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Ranked as the fourth best Marvel game ever by What Culture, this title came as a surprise. The 2009 film of the same name was almost universally panned by critics, and because of that the game was largely overlooked. But thanks to its incredibly satisfying, God Of War-style combat, as well as a real-time healing system for Wolverine that actually showed you his body ripping apart and coming back together, this game wound up being a genuine success. It might still be the most fun you can have controlling a superhero.

Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows

There are actually quite a few Spider-Man games that could make this list. The
character has had a uniquely satisfying history in gaming, but Web Of Shadows was
probably the best of the bunch. The 2008 game incorporates modern gameplay while
still carrying a simple charm to it. The game consists of 3D beat-em-up gameplay,
but also has its own unique story not tied to any particular film. The original
story was oddly refreshing given the general confusion of Spider-Man movies in the
last 15 years.

Deadpool

The Deadpool game has its flaws, but it’s hard to do anything but praise it for its
uniqueness. As is typical of Deadpool comics and the 2016 Deadpool movie,
the character is constantly breaking the fourth wall, talking through and
“designing” his own video game while you play it. Between that, the engaging action,
and the strong graphics of the remastered 2015 version it’s title that’s definitely
worthy of this list.

  1. I do not enjoy much of the superhero games as the plot is almost always the same except for INCREDIBLE HULK! Playing this on console and destroying a city while doing missions is definitely fun. It’s like GTA but with a big green monster character. 🙂

  2. Seems kind of cool. Not surprising that there are a bunch of Marvel video games since the comics are quite popular. Same goes with DC Comics having a bunch of video games, but I think there are just more games for Marvel because that franchise just seems bigger.
