The shooter that does not want to die. DNF has been ‘reborn’ and shelved several times. The game may be forever known as vaporware, but only time will tell the full story.

Comment: I was pleased to play old Duke Nukem, had a bigger fun than this one, even tho this game advanced in graphics and all, it is for me way below the older one. Just they had intentions, but they used them wrong.

Comment: DNF has A LOT of vital pros and cons, and while most feel the negatives outshine the positives I wholeheartedly can’t concur. The action is often monotonous and basic in a way that doesn’t even leave room for “old-school” thrills. This is a game that allows for headshots, but certainly doesn’t require them. Most enemies don’t put out too much of a fight and they go down relatively easily. The game doesn’t make up for their weakness by throwing large numbers of bad guys at you at once, and there are even large sections of the game where there’s no combat at all. Considering most of the non-combat sequences require you to wander and jump around bland, old-looking environments that feel like they were touched-up by someone wielding nothing but a shader that somehow makes every single surface look slightly greasy, the breaks from combat aren’t any better than the parts where you shoot your guns. Even the boss fights get repetitive by having you face a sort-of-harder version of the game’s first boss as the game’s final boss. The entire campaign is sprinkled with bits of dialogue from Duke Nukem himself. This, you might remember, is one of the key points about the character. He’s a wise-cracking, movie-line-stealing misogynist who loves strippers and cigars. Back in 1996, we were still coming to terms with the idea that PC game characters could talk at all, so it was easy to fall in love with Duke’s constant chatter. But times have changed, and Duke’s schtick just feels unimaginative and sad in Duke Nukem Forever. Duke’s still lifting his material from other sources, and he’s getting a fair amount of it wrong. Plus plenty of it is way, way out of date. A mangled version of the “remember, Sully, when I promised to kill you last? I lied” line from Commando makes its way in here. At one point Duke sings “America, fuck yeah” just because your commanding officer mentioned America. The Internet isn’t safe, either, with “porkchop sandwiches” dropping in straight out of Eric Fensler’s GI Joe PSA reedits. That happened in, what, 2003? No jokes are wrapped around these references, making the whole thing feel like some kind of sub-Family Guy attempt at getting you to chuckle just because you remember a line from Starship Troopers. When he’s not “being Duke” by using movie catchphrases, he’s “being Duke” by alluding to how much trim he gets. In the unironic world of Duke Nukem Forever, Duke’s a superstar sex god with his own Vegas penthouse, complete with a set of sexy twins willing to do anything for him. Females that you encounter along the way fall all over themselves when they encounter you, and the first 30 minutes or so is little more than ego stroking, probably designed to remind you that Duke’s a bad-ass. Men want to be him! Women want to be with him! The whole thing feels like it’s trying too hard, and Duke’s act was already kind of lame the first time around. This time, presented at face value without any meaningful wink or nod to modern sensibilities, the whole thing feels like it was written by crazy people. The character simply doesn’t work in 2011, and now that I’ve played Duke Nukem Forever, I’m left wondering if the character ever truly worked at all, or if standards were just so much lower back then that we didn’t bother paying much attention to how stupid it all was. In addition to the campaign, the game also has a multiplayer mode with four different game types. These let you take the Duke weapons into standard deathmatch, team deathmatch, king of the hill, and capture the flag games. It has a maximum player count of eight. Hey, at least that’s more than Duke Nukem 3D supported, right? You’ll find a remake of the Hollywood level from Duke 3D among the 10 maps, but it just looks weirdly filthy. The map design doesn’t feel like it sets you up for elaborate trip mine and pipe bomb traps like the previous game did, which is too bad, as that was one of the best parts about Duke’s multiplayer. Like the rest of the game, the multiplayer feels a little mindless and old. Not classic–old. It feels weird to criticize a game that’s been in development for as long as this one has for feeling like a relic, but in the end, Duke Nukem Forever’s development history only really matters to a fraction of the overall audience. As I said before, if you’re a part of that crowd, part of that faction that finds yourself so fascinated by this whole project that you need to know how it ends, I recommend you play Duke Nukem Forever for yourself. But I’d practically insist that you do so on the PC and try to wait for a sale. If you’re not willing to play a sloppy, cobbled together first-person shooter just because it has some kind of weird historical meaning, though, just forget this ever happened and move on. It’s great, in some ways, that Duke Nukem Forever was released at all. But don’t be confused into thinking that it’s a great game.

Comment: I was more pleased to play the old Duke Nukem. This game just shows how bad can the new games be towards the old ones. But maybe this game will be interesting to some guys. I just don’t find it good in any way.

Comment: A game that people since 1997 have been wanting to play, wanting to feel the pleasure of playing as Duke again and kicking more alien ass and saving more chicks. After 12 years it is finally released and it shows to be not a revoultionary and legendary game as the hype said it would be, but a lame, boring, ugly, cheap, waste of time kind of game. The game literally takes place 12 years after Duke Nukem 3D, and Duke has to kill the aliens because they stole Earths women, the story still holds Dukes tradition, it has all of the old classic weapons of 3D, but doesn’t make it feel like the original. You are shortened to a two weapon limit which was copied from Halo as well as regenerating health from COD and Halo. Duke Nukem Forever isn’t a game that lives to the hype, its a copy paste game with a Duke Nukem costume over it, a real good life like costume. The multiplayer is something that I am not going to even talk about, but it is laggy, boring, and cheap as **** Unless you are a die hard Duke fan who doesn’t care about the two weapon limit, health regenerating, ugly design and cheap gameplay, then go ahead a waste your money on this horrible excuse for a game.

Comment: Should be called Duke Nukem Never Again. Rude and crude are not needed to make an interesting game. Take a pass.

  1. Playing duke nukem 3d was one of my first games and I was really happy when I could try Duke Nukem Forever.
But this game took way to longer to finish(12 years) and was such a disappointment to me.
I say skip it and play old duke nukem 3d(if you can get over outdated graphic).

  2. I love this game. Just like the original game Duke steps outside the box; world interaction, great game play, and classic quotes; its a game that can be played over and over and I still laugh. When you’re ready for some fun gaming in your downtime this is it! Come get some.

  3. 3/5 – Duke Nukem Forever is a FPS and it’s a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D. I think where the rating of this game takes a hit is due to how meme-y and gimmicky this game can come across as. The main character is also very stereotypical. It’s one of the reasons I wasn’t too fond of another game, Saints Row, because it tried to be so much like GTA but also silly at the same time.

  4. Id say this is quite a bad game that tries to sell by popping in a familiar name so people rely on nostalgia. Yeah duke nukem is fun in ps and stuff, but u cnt just pop in an fps with improper animation and physics, give it duke nukem as name and expect it to sell. Maybe it did at first cause people waited so long for it. Kinda glad halflife 3 didnt came true if its gonna be this much of a disapointment.

  5. Duke Nukem Forever is a pretty cool FPS. I’m not as opinionated on this game as Duke Nukem fans, since I’m looking at this game from a general FPS point-of-view rather than looking at this game from the whole franchise, but this game does give me a pretty good impression. For instance, I think the plot seems pretty cool, especially since it involves killing aliens which isn’t something I see commonly in FPS games, and the voice acting as a whole is kind of cool as well (maybe even a bit cheesy at times). Gameplay is pretty neat as well; the game feels like it has more action that many other FPS. Duke Nukem Forever probably isn’t as great as Halo, but it is kind of different. Overall, I’d rate this game a 4/5.
